I draw a skull in charcoal and experiment with different methods of achieving a dark background. I also play around with shading and other techniques. I used compressed charcoal, charcoal pencils, chamois, my fingers, nitram charcoal and other stuff too

If oil from your fingers gets to the paper, it might change the properties of that paper and it won't perform like it should. It changes the way you can take off or put on charcoal. Might lead to unwanted marks and spots. And as many alraedy commented, fixative spray will help you to produce the blackest black. Nice skull you got there. Have fun making a mess!

I love using charcoal, especially because of its impermanence while working it. My first try when I restarted my drawing practise a couple of months ago was a sheepskull I had lying around. And yeah, messy stuff, dust gets everywhere -

i-ve been working with charcoal too for my class and it-s definitely been an interesting experience since i-ve never really used it as much prior - but let-s experiment away and continue to find out what works!

I like to experiment with charcoal too, but I feel ya! I use my fingers too. I use a fixit spray to set it and usually the powder/charcoal will stay. The - looks cool! Nice job man!

I've recently started using charcoal and I like it. Using an easel is much better than on a table. I learned that the hard way as well. lol Love the drawing alot!
