The Basic Elements - Shape Value Color Edge - Proko
video description
Welcome to Proko, my name is Stan Prokopenko. This episode is a really important one. I'm gonna be introducing you guys to the basic elements that make up any picture. We see everything around us in 3D and then we try to draw it on a two-dimensional surface. Of course, drawing an actual 3D world on paper is impossible, so we have to learn how to create the illusion of depth. Any picture can be broken down into the basic elements to create that illusion. It-s kinda like the periodic table of elements for artists, except lucky for us, it-s a much smaller table of elements. So, we can use these elements to show form and depth if we-re realists or representational artists. But it really isn-t just used to show form and depth, it could be used for anything. Any picture that you can see. Anything around you can be broken up into these elements. An abstract watercolor painting, a realistic portrait, a photograph of a sunset, anything that you can see, can be described with shape, value, color, and edge. I would even argue that there are only three major elements: shape, color, and edge, because value is just a sub-element of color. But value is so important, that artists have separated it into its own element, and when we-re drawing, it-s the only sub-element of color that we can see. And so, we forget about the concept of color for drawing and we just say value. When we start painting, we introduce the other two sub-elements of color: hue and chroma. So let-s go over these elements one by one, starting with shape.

Stan, looks like the last comment was 6 years ago. Wow. I'm late to the party. Have painted and drawn since adolescence. I build as well. Coming back to this to update my rusty knowledge and lack of! LOL! This video has fewer views than others you've done. But it's one I will review many times although it won't help the algorithm. Will be using this to improve my drawing and desire to sketch my projects as I'm not to computer literate. LOL! Shapes forms and hues. Relating to grey scale and light and color. Gonna take a bit to get my aging head around and stick it there, LOL! Again late to the party but enjoying the vibes of your past trail blazing. Thanks!

. after watching so many lessons from this guy and other guys, my brain just automatically analyzes everything I look at, sometimes I do it like it's something normal, I study everything I look at because my brain got used to it HAHAHA like, I'll at something then I'll see it in a simplified form, the shapes and everything, then I'll see how lighting and shadow works on it, then the smaller details. Oh he mentioned it in the end oop-

Why do you obscure the bottom of the video screen with a black subtitle banner so we can not see the lower portion of the screen?

Ok. Just call Chroma what the rest of the world calls it: -Saturation-. It relates more to the software tools we all use.
