Figure Drawing Critiques 4 - Landmarks - Proko ritter89: The videos are great. My only question is why present gesture before landmarks? Everyone seems to present gesture first before structure and landmarks/anatomy, which makes little sense, imo, b/c gestures are near impossible without at least some familiarity with human anatomy/landmarks and structure/volume. I've seen beginners attempt gestures without a plan of attack and the results are disastrous more often than not. They tend to draw chaotic lines willy-nilly in all direction without regard for proportion or anatomical landmarks. Many instructors encourage this stuff for some reason too. They claim it's -creative-

Depends on the amount of accuracy you're going for. The more cylindrical you make the shape of the upper torso, the more that centerline will move to the left (to a certain limit naturally. But realistically, the chest isn't cylindrical, it's more of a box (because of the scapula and muscles. And if you would approach the upper torso as a box, the centerline would be in a much different location. Also, this is about landmarks right? Angular and positional should be as accurate as you can be.

Funny how when you draw your exaggerated gesture for the torso and hip relation, you draw the spine with almost exactly the same angles as the person you're critiquing did, which you corrected. :P

If you don't have quality cameras or stuff, you don't have another choice cos good quality is very expensive and some artists begin young.

Yeah but that line was a center line and not really the spine. Them two lines be similar, but they don't be the same line doe.

Chanon Finley. 300+ images for $10 on Proko's website. Great model--totally worth it. (Same goes for the other models, too)
