Top 5 Shading Mistakes - Proko David: My goodness you are certainly arrogant. With all your should and should nots. I am a cartoonist, who occasionally branches in to doing more real life drawings. I have been drawing all my life and as I am in my mid 50-s I have been drawing way before you were born! Your understanding of drawing seems limited to focusing the unimaginative and then bringing that -knowledge- to poor scorn on others. I would encourage others watching this, to find a teacher who embraces different styles of drawing. Remember, if you like it, and others like it, why would you need to win the approval of this arrogant child?
Also a great cartoonist/drawer whose work is great to learn from is from a man who drew for the old German newspaper -Der Sturmer-, his working name was Fips, his full name was Philipp Rupprecht.

There's great -Value- in learning how to shade correctly.
Simply, Shading is not black and white. be aware of the -Gray Areas-.

In college, when I had to draw reference images with charcoal I would always take a picture with my phone and place the image in black and white. It was much easier to discern color shades that way.

begs the question: are half tones only in the light area? Also, how do you determine the range of these half tones, or in other words, how do you determine the size of the center light?

At 11: 41 does this only apply when comparing halftones and shadows on the same colour surface? Surely light on a black surface is still a higher value than a shadow on a white surface?

Thanks, I needed to be reminded of some things. I'm relearning to draw again, it's been 20 years since I quit drying and painting. You really do loose it, if you don't use it.

As someone who struggles with this exact stuff in portrait drawings this is a much appreciated video. I-m excited to get into another drawing with this advice in mind.

No rules. The less schooling, the more raw and natural the outcome.
Lots of practice is the key. Van Gogh, Basquiat, etc.
