My professor taught us using Vilppu, Robert Beverly Hale, and Hampton. I can't remember the order exactly but I think he had us read Vilppu to start, and we had to draw shapes from it. Then read Robert Beverley Hale and then did master copy sketches while reading, and then we went slowly part by part copying from hampton for homework and then the next day drawing from life.
So while I drew I had an idea of 3 different takes on anatomy and form, and also considerations of what Raphael or Michelangelo etc etc had drawn while I did charcoal studies on newsprint in class.
And then I broke my elbow at some point so now I know all the muscles in the arm by heart but I don't know the names, but I felt that sort of study was the kind with the least friction.
I think my classmates also improved a lot, although some still made the same mistakes they did before so I think it depends on the person. For me and my friend we immediately became the best students in class and my professor even had me teach the lower level students in the anatomy portion of class.
In conclusion, the out to in, or in to out approach depends on the person. (lol everything depends)

When would you call somebody a beginner? When can you start working on anatomy?
Because I've been drawing for about eight years, but otherwise all my life, and I always felt like there was some license you'd get where you weren't a beginner anymore. But I kept drawing shapes until I grew tired of it, and I wasn't making anything I liked anymore, so I stopped for awhile.

The English version of Gottfried Bammes -Die Gestalt des Menschen- is called -The Complete Guide to Anatomy for Artists & Illustrators-, it's a different book from your -Complete Guide to Life Drawing-.
I know this because the German version is out of print, so I had to research the still available English version, ironically. -

i did the exact mistake they mentioned here. I started the proko anatomy course and it was very arduous without the fundamental context. about 20 videos in I went back to their figure drawing fundamentals (about the construction from gesture to simplified forms) and i then realized that the structure is 90% of the work.

Damnnnn first 4 min and you already pointed out why I couldn't learn the skull properly. Im clearly concentrated on learing it fast and try to get my head drawings pretty instead of doing the hard work.
First edit. DAMNNNNN I gotta learn gesture and structure, outside inside my friends: bruh:

This has cleared up quite a few issues that I realised when I got Bridgmans guide to anatomy, as I felt like I was completely lost in regards to what I should be working on. Turns out I need to work on my forms which Ive always been a little overconfident on and never looked deeper into.

wait so when using these books, do i like just copy whatever i see on those books like the diagrams. cos like most of the times these things don't have guiding proportions and i feel helpless when i see the books and i just feel like i need the proportions to start

Has there been a video or tutorial that explains how to learn anatomy outside-in? It seems intuitive as I'm trying to learn anatomy now, but the idea of just full on harsh memorization of exact placements of ligaments, bones and tendons is absolutely painful

Once you understand where a bone, muscle, or skin starts and ends, you understand where it can't be thanks to physics. A head isn't turning if the shoulders aren't opposite of it. Unless your drawing the exorcist. Not that I know how to lol

Fascinating to see how your work takes older work (-the whole bucket thing that I did for the pelvis pretty much came out of Bammes-) and moves it into the video-streaming age, adding a dimension (or a couple of dimensions actually) to it.
