Constructing Forms Not Tracing Shapes - Hamstring Critiques - Proko

While critiquing students- hamstring assignments, I saw a lot of people tracing flat shapes onto the body instead of constructing the forms. This is a very common problem, but a big one! For this hamstrings critique, I take a look at an artist who submitted their tracing assignment from the facebook group. I give out tips on how to draw them to be more dynamic why you should rely less on your eyes and more on your knowledge to construct the forms. I think its interesting when you say construction. Because I think the girl is trying very hard to construct. She is trying to trace the shape that's there and make it into a 3D form and using cross contours. She's also trying to use S curves and C curves. You are using -bellies- all curved shapes. But in the hands of an amateur, they will probably look like an amorphous blob.
So far I haven't run into lessons by anyone, not just yourself, where the instructor can tell you how to complete a shape. Its easy to check your drawing for tangents after. I always thought there might be some clear rule like you must always indicate three sides of an obect for it to be a shape. I attended Watts a few months ago and remember overhearing a teacher, might have even being Jeff saying how important it was to close or enclose your shapes. I am not sure I ever quite understood the concept since I was not in that room. I know the thing that still eludes me is being able to add a very clear shape upon a shape. It usually feels like I have indicated a soft edge for a cheek but doesn't look or feel like a complete eggy shape. It blends out in on place or another. If I force it it looks wrong.

I feel for Pamela and other artists struggling with understanding anatomy. I have a degree in Human anatomy and physiology and I'm a veterinarian so I've pretty much got all species covered when it comes to drawing. I have never realised how ingrained anatomy is in my mind and how (comparatively) easy it makes it to draw figures until watching people struggle with this very thing.

I love this so much. I learned this technique in college, and I teach a simpler version to my young students (ages 8-14. I also make them use the tracing paper. :)

58 seconds in and I'm just wondering how wide the text stretches on the screen. Your head swivelled all the way from left to right to read Pamela's message -
