Scott reviews ideation sketches that were submitted for his Monster Lab assignment. This clip is from the full critique where Scott reviews a student page that has empty space. While the sketches are good, Scott points out there-s a missed opportunity to create more sketches and to use the negative space as a challenge to create characters out of it. He-ll show you how he fills the page with character ideas and why it-s important for artists to really utilize the negative space with additional sketches. This guy didn't even comment on the character designs, or evaluate his imagination. Instead he criticized not filling up the page, or calling his characters lumpy, while his own pumpkin creatures were lumpy themselves. Besides the person that submitted their work was doing an under sea theme, so there certainly lumpy creatures in the ocean. We didn't even get a good look at the creature designs. I mean the were humanoid creatures coming out of sea shells. This guy just shot this person down on things that had no bearing on the person's design skills.

It's SUPER inspiring to know that one of my favorite (if not, my favorite) graphic novel series, Bone, is also acknowledged and appreciated by professionals. I'm sure many are aware of its existence and beauty, but it is a series that is mostly discussed by younger people or nostalgic adults that read it during middle school. It is one of my inspirations and I own the whole collection so I am happy to see it get talked about more.

Thats the problem I've been having. I've lost my voice because of being so negative about my work. I have so much more to learn and just dont know where to start. I feel like I need a mentor to guide me

Thanks for the critique, Scott! I-ll be sure to go back in and fill up that page. I also really liked that last bit about line quality. Extremely helpful.

Exercise is: draw in the blank space between your sketches in order to experiment more on weird shapes while being constrained by space. #stopclickbait

Mister, I must say, you speak wisdom. I have gone past my chance to be an artist but my creative inner self was taking it all in.
