Stylization Exercise with Loish - Proko

Loish is going live to show you an exercise where she tries two different stylization approaches to the same study. It's a good jumping off point to talk about departing from a reference photo and different ways to stylize. Demo is done using procreate on the ipad. Loish will also be taking question alongside Stan from the Proko community (Link to submit questions above Christache: I love Loish calling out Stan for not really listening to her answers. His tutorial videos are generally pretty great, but when he interviews people I wish he would focus on listening more, seems like he's always just looking ahead for the next question, or looking at things online or waiting for his turn to talk. So glad he finally got called out gently for it.

I also refer to my rendering as sculpting! I use a colour picker and a low opacity, usually soft brush, just one finger on the alt key, pushing my colours around until they're all blended to the right degree in the right place. It's one of the few solid parts of my work flow - Also one of those random tips picked up from watching a tutorial like Loish said! But as you see the forms take shape around the hardness or softness between shades as you're moving these colours, it really does feel like sculpting.

Man, you got to ask your guests more questions and have a conversation. Loish kept setting him up for answers with social cues etc and it's like he was so absent it's like he didn't want to be there or was bored himself. Fair enough if that's one's natural personality but goodness I was distracted but the non-flowing dynamic. It's like Loish was just answering exam questions and then they cut back to the piece of paper she wrote it on for a reply and its just a sheet of paper sitting there.

I grew up being told I could never make a career out of art and was pushed to go to college and get a -real job-. Eventually I dropped out of college and just recently at 29 years old I have decided to start my journey. I am a stay at home mom and I don-t even know what I want to do but I have been working with watercolor for the last 2 years and just 2 weeks ago I started working with digital art.

I used to be overwhelmed that my friend was always going to be better than me. But I realized that if I admit that I can't be as good as them, then that means I'm already shirking my own ability to grow or even to begin to surpass them.
My favorite quote paraphrased is -whether or not you think you can or think you can't, either way you're right. -

Only saw a fraction of the video but I immediately noticed how good her English speaking is. Can't detect any signs of a Dutch accent. Most of the times I can immediately hear when someone speaking English speaks Dutch natively but with her I would be fooled into thinking she speaks English natively.

I disagree with her point at 59: 00. Looking at those that you admire is very inspiring for me, and copying them and figuring out their techniques is part of the learning process. It only makes me more proud when my work starts to look like those I admire, with less and less effort.

This interview have helped in a lot of ways especially about being comfortable with inconsistency in types of art style and stuff to draw.
Being authentic to the type artist you are rather than being 'like other artists'.
Thank you Proko & Loish! You guys are awesome.

this was such an amazing conversation! really loved both of you: ) and it's a good idea to show a painting session without painting so that the person interviewed can be focused on the duscussion, yet there is something entertaining and informative on the screen
