Growing Beets, From Seed to Harvest
video description
After watching this video, I think I know what I would do differently next time. Our growing season is about 120 days and much of that is hot, dry weather. Our last frost is anywhere from the end of April to the middle of May. There are plenty of things that I can grow; but, I like to try new things.

Beets are one of my favourite veg to grow! They re amazing roasted in the oven just with oil salt and pepper, BUT pickled is my favourite. Below is the recipe I love:
Cook beets till soft. After cooking the skin will rub off easily. Chop them into sterilized jars however you want! I like chunks.
Combine in a pot on the stove:
2 cups water
2 cups vinegar (pickling vinegar will create a more pickle-y vinegar heavy beet, regular vinegar is more mild)
2 cups sugar
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp powdered cloves
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp allspice
1 tbsp mustard seed
Cook mixture until boiling then pour brine over beets in jars. Wipe mouth of jar with vinegar soaked paper towel, then seal with lids and process (you can use a large pot of boiling water, just make sure that the jar is completely submerged in water and boil for 10 mins. This will completely sterilize everything again also. I find it is good to use some type of wire rack at the bottom of pots to stop jars from breaking)

Beets are totally worth growing, and they keep incredibly long in the crisper drawer. I'm surprised you peel them. I oven roast in foil, then the skins slip right off. I have much better luck with spring beets than fall though. Albino white also have less of that earthy flavor. I'm also in the love pickled beets camp. Food all year long, grow a ton.

I'm in a cold climate and this is my first year with more space then a square meter (150 times as much) so I sown beets a while ago and planted them out 2 weeks ago. Due to the wether I used some fleece and the snails really loved the cover I provided for them they ate all my beet plants guess who is sowing again tomorow.

But it's also funny that when converted like 6 inches it's turns in 12. 3564543cm and it became in my head about 12cm or 13cm lol

Hiya. I'd like to add drip irrigation to my raised bed garden. I'm a novice. We have irrigation in place. I'm guessing that I have to use one of the existing stations and set it up as a separate zone on my Rachio irrigation device so they get watered more frequently. Which of your videos should I watch?

Hey Kevin, what were the temps like in your area this week? We had record breaking temperatures in southern Ontario, Canada. About 86 fahrenheit for an entire week.
I'm a little concerned about the insects and plants coming out early and dying off. We're expecting frost again next week.

Great video. I've had a hard time, 3 times over with some little critter stealing my beet seedlings when sown direct, just taking the top leaves, same happened with radish. I'm in Phoenix, any suggestions on how to protect direct sown from unknown critters in a suburban backyard?

I have tried many varieties, direct seeding them and transplants, but he only one that grows for me is the Chioggia. The other varieties stay very small and never produce the bulb. Not sure what i am doing wrong. Thanks for the video. I prefer to eat them roasted.

My mom used to grow beets and I absolutely hated them. I've had no luck growing beets for the past four years. I want it mainly dried and to use in smoothies. But for the first time in four years, I finally have beets growing. So I'm pretty happy.

I was thinking of asking you this morning! My beets have been in the ground since seeding in October. Do I keep them longer? The red are smaller than the few golden beets I harvested a month ago. Are they good for summer garden?

I tested a few varieties but my favorite in terms of flavor were the cylindrical beets! They look a bit odd but they chop into consistent pieces nicely and they're so sweet and they have this smooth and almost waxy texture. Wow!

I like it that you show us how to process, store and sometimes how to cook the veggie you are harvesting. I think every harvest video is not complete without those added steps. Love your content - keep it coming.

Totally should've taken a bite out of that freshly picked beat on camera and briefly discussed the eating experience. Would increase production value. Do that on all harvest videos. It would be that much more engaging.
