The Kratky Method was first published in a paper in 2009 by B. A. Kratky, and describes a beautiful method of growing plants in a non-circulating hydroponic system. It's a very simple, yet effective, way to grow plants hydroponically. Great for leafy greens like lettuce, kale, spinach, and a variety of herbs. I've even seen people do Kratky tomatoes or Kratky cucumbers, though I haven't grown them myself (yet!

Hi EG! I'm just getting into hydroponics and it's little late in the year for chicago. I see lettuce and kale can grow in cooler temperatures when in soil. Do you think I would be able to start kale and lettuce now if Chicago gets to 44 degrees to 56 degrees fahrenheit in november? I was assuming that it should be enough time for the vegetable plants to harden before weather begins to drop some more. I've also read that plants grow faster with hydro. Let me know if you think I can get a good crop for a hydro newbie or if my plants will be dead by the time November comes!

I was able to grow 3 Thai basil plants basically for free!
Ordered some take out pho
Used the soup containers as the reservoir and added a second container on top. Theres about a 2 air gap
Drilled holes in the one on top
Covered the bottom one with aluminum foil
Shaved off some of the stem and stuck it in some rock wool
Bought plant food concentrate and use an old OJ bottle
Fill up the reservoir every 5 days
Theyve been growing strong for 6mo

excuse me, will these hydroponic fertilizer feed vegetables be poison? i tried this method and ate the lettuce grew but caused vomiting and badly sick, almost went to hospital for that. i think i got the fertilizer poisoned. makes me scare to use fertilizer any for fruit growing. but from your video and other related video, everyone is doing fine. and this method seems no problem to grow food for consumption. so how was that happened? the brand i used is called

Ive been dabbling in kratky for a month or two now, and im really messing something up. :/ i fill it just below the brim of the net cup, enough to house some oxygen, and enough to soak and wick the roots. but after a day or two, the leaves just start yellowing. then it takes 2 weeks to recover. once its recovered, the nutrient solution has already decreased by prolly 50%, and the plant's just about to start growing. idunno where im going wrong really.

So I been looking for something to do in gardening for a long time. I live in the city of chicago and have a small backyard with limited space. I was wondering about how this would work for me. Can I sit this baby out in spring / summer only. Are there ways to do this in house during cold months? I am literally trying to do basic stuff at home.

My kratky jars are not as successful as growing in the IDOO system. The only difference is the light. I dont have a suitable window, so I bought a blue/red light. Can you recommend a better light for a small setup. Is it better to use a white light along with the red and blue? I am in Australia. Thanks.

My hesitation is that it's not a recyclable option, there's no organic matter to compost and recycle afterwards, it's very much a clinical way to produce, fail to see the sutainability of this option. unless we were living in space, even then it wouldn't last long.

Water soluble Mycorrhiza is the key for Hydroponics. Never will you get algae, fungal pathogens or in fact any other dieseases/pests again. I got a Kratky Starfruit tree, have not changed the water since 2 years, just keep adding new water and Mycos.

Leaving the container outside with the heat, water will evaporate over time. The question is, do the nutrients evaporate as well or will the solution become more concentrated? When it becomes low do you top it off with fresh solution or just water?

I'm just a beginner, I want to grow organic herbs like mint, basil. the nutrients(organic) look scary because of the colors. How do I know this is even good for me? Is there another 'organic' alternative?

Sir, I'm just getting started with trying the Kratky method. I'm having trouble getting my seeds to germinate. I'm using the Rockwool Cubes. Any other suggestions for germinating seeds for Kratky?

You need to put enough nutrients for the plant's entire life cycle. How do you figure that out? In your list of things needed to get started, that seems like #1 on the list to me.

Your Amazon nutrients link isn't available. Can you please identify the exact nutrient products needed? I will go directly to General Hydroponics to order. Thank you!
