Planting Onion Sets: What to Watch Out For

Onions are an interesting crop, as they're a biennial in nature. That means they grow from seed to a dormant bulb in their first year, and from that bulb to flower (and back to seed) in their second year. It's important to take this into consideration when planting onions. You have three options when it comes to planting them: 1. Start onions from seeds 2. Start onions as transplants 3. Planting onion sets In today's video we're going with option #3. It's a great way to get into onion growing, because you shortcut a lot of the upfront growing time. Onion sets have been forced into dormancy while they're still immature bulbs. This means they have a chance of going to flower instead of bulbing up. To avoid this, make sure you select bulbs on the smaller side. they're less likely to go to seed

Didn't know about the two year maturity for sets. Started both sets and seeds. Have patience. The sets ate doing magnificently. The seeds nothing. yet. I did elephant garlic last fall and it wasn't til spring the greens appeared. Just harvested scapes and with be looking forward to big bulb harvest in a few weeks. Is the same done with onion harvest for biggest bulbs? Wait til the flower bulb scape produce then cut them off to let plant energy go back to making bulbs bigger unless wanting seed? Thanks again

Hi! Thanks so much for your videos! I now have a worm farm that is running smoothly thanks to you. :) I wanted to know what kind, IF any, fertilizer you use for your onions. I have mine in 5 gallon buckets, planted them about 2 weeks ago and am wondering if I need to fertilize with the 10 20 10 for this time period. Or if I should wait and just go with the blood meal later for the nitrogen content? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thx for sharing! Im actually looking to plant some bulbs this weekend. However, I dont have a raised bed and just trying them (and a few others) out as a test run to see if I can get the hang of gardening. Will these work in a container/planter of some sort? If so will organic potting mix alone work or will I need to add fertilizer, compost or anything else?

Thank you for this. I was not quite understanding bi annuals. I believe I do now. I planted seeds and covered them with straw for the winter. So I guess I will get if anything the starts and greens. The following year leave in the ground then I'll get onions. I hope I got it. Have a great day

I plant my onions thats closer together so I could get all the good scallions for the year and whatever I miss will grow into the next year and I do get a lot more Onions that way Early in the year in the early spring and they seem to grow just fine but your planting is really good

I needed this video! I was in the garden today and my onions (I planted sets like these you showed today, well, the onions are about the same size as when I planted them in March! I'll cover them with mulch and leave them in the ground this winter (southern Iowa. Thank you again!

If I wanted to grow seeds for microgreens can I pack a bunch of sets into a grow bag densely planted for the tops for spring/green onions and then letting them flower to get seeds? Have you ever had that happen and if so abut how long until they bolt and flower?

I plant mine bottom down but the next day there upsidedown the birds love turning them over this will keep happening until they root. How can I get the birds to leave them alone. I never heard of top coat. I've been growing a garden for over 37 years.

You dont mention a common problem after planting onion setts. Birds thing the pales, dried tops are worms and pull the whole thing out. You may have to drop a net over the planting area until greenery has emerged.

Can someone help. I bought some red onion sets and noticed some of them in the bin had started to mold. can I still plant if there's a little mold on the plant? Can you peel back any of it before planting?

At what point do you trim off the greens how did they do? I keep seeing other gardeners say you cant get an onion bulb from a set. I of course planted sets I hope I didnt waste space in my garden with them.

I gave u a like, but u can't expect to get onion bulbs of those baby onions if you plant them on the surface like did sir, you should plant them 4 - 5 cm deep in order for them to make a bulb
reply

It's a good idea to use the dibber. If you just push them in you can damage the base of the set and it allows molds and bacteria into the onion itself and you're more likely to have them rot out

Great video! I have wondered about trying seeds rather that sets for a few years, I might try both and see what works best next year
Sets now - seeds in spring, should work nicely!

Weve had a lot of rain so I kept my onion sets longer than I shouldve and now they're fairly dry. I don't imagine they'll grow now and ive probably wasted my money?
