5 Story Rooftop Gardening in Spain (Full Tour)

My friend Robert Strauss is The Gardener On The Roof. I met him in Barcelona, Spain and had to come to his house to see his highly-productive and creative rooftop garden. In fact, it's more than a rooftop garden as he has 5 total stories of growing space. He makes his own compost by getting scraps from the local green grocer, as well as collecting leaves from his neighbors during the fall and winter

I am wondering if you could entice Robert to discuss his composting method in more detail, I would be very interested in trying something like this at home and love the compact design. I have looked (possibly not hard enough) to find more details on his particular design but have fallen short. It seems it needs minimal sun, relying almost entirely on decomposing material for heat, has little to no drainage (for water, and apart from a regular turn there is little aeration. It almost seems to defy some of the basic rules of this style of compost. I AM VERY INTRIGUED!

Hey Kevin. What a pleasure it was to have you at the house and what a GREAT video you produced. Out of the 1, 967 views the video has had at this moment, I promise you that my mother-in-law and I are responsible for no more than 1, 500 of them. And because Endow 77 stared at the screen for three minutes after seeing my compost, I'm putting together a video on how I do it. Hope to have it up and running in a couple of days. Thanks for everything, Kevin, Jon, and the EG team.

Being an avid Raised bed & Container intensive gardener myself for more years than I care to count, I am always looking for Ideas and Techniques for that certain Gentleman Farmer look!

Great, I garden on a cement pad hanging over a steep bluff on the PNW, so this was especially interesting to me, of course at the moment we have snow, but gardening will commence soon, LOL. I also grow broad beans all winter, mine are starting to flower now too, but the snow will set them back a little I think, great crop, delicious beans and nitrogen fixing, more Americans should grow them.

Ha! I'm originally from Iowa and had a good laugh at that interaction. Here in San Francisco i've been trying to figure out a way to urban garden. Backyard gets very little sunlight and roof is unsafe to reach. Damn! Maybe I'll try the front steps as they get sun and just hope nobody will mess with it.
Great video and cheers to you Robert.

Wow! Robert is an awesome urban gardener. Does his wife share the romescu sauce recipe? Can we get Calcote onion bulbs in the U. S? What a great documentary on this epat urban rooftop farmer. Loved the neighbors weighing in from their balconies. And that compost.

So HOPING he uses charcoal instead of coal briquettes? Nothing tastes better than cooking on wood. Far healthier. Gosh, I onions make me ill, and I still want to eat them! I LOVE shallots and leeks-amazing! Thank you SO much-wonderful!

Bravo Robert! You are an inspiration to all of us in Barcelona trying to promote Urban Farming! Thanks for all your advice and well done to Kevin for finding him! Love calcots by the way: -) big hug to both of you guys. love. Adela

gosh, i hope he knows that there are seeds in the fruits in this garbage he collects too. i am a seed hoarder and i saw him pour down the garbage for the compost and i was like oh my gosh, there are seeds in there, lol

This is fascinating - and Robert is a natural! How great to see his composting method, growing operation and to also fit in a visit to his neighborhood veggie shop and to learn about the calcot tradition. Great video: )

Fear of heights here, but tried not to look over the edge and just loved this interview and tour (except for the edges. Wish I could get some bulbs in California to grow it myself!

I hope you can bring some seeds from these back to the USA. Also, as far as the ornamentals are concerned-hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread, but give us roses.

This is incredibly well made, you're a natural for this kind of thing. You should come and do a documentary about my bookshelf with some jars of moss and a cactus
