Great advice. With sweet corn, my big timing issue is do not let it over-ripen. That's why I go ahead and do the pop a zit (kernal) test even before the shuck has gotten yellow (soon as the silks are black) Your sweet corn should have full rounded off kernals. If it looks like dent corn with a dimple then you've waited too late, although you can often find a use and consume it, just not on the cob. QUESTION: Can you provide advice on fighting corn pests that drill into your shuck or invade the ear through the tassel. Again, great basic advice on corn. Wish I'd had access to this simple info years ago. Thank you, and be very blessed!

Im growing corn and they are almost 9ft tall now but no pollen tassels have grown. They have nice green leaves with some drying leaves at the very bottom. I planted them in Zone 9b back in late July in a very sunny area I water them everyday because I haven't mulched them. Soil was prepped on original soil with Kellogg's grow mulch and added very finely chopped food scraps back in April and May. Is now September and proud of how tall my corn is but no sings of pollen tassels at all or corn cobs showing either. I don't know what to do.

I learned something new. I've grown sweet corn before when I had my community garden plot; I got some good ears and some with missing kernels. Now, I know why. But, it all was good to eat, even the sparsely populated cobs. I haven't tried popping corn yet; but, I make it so rarely; I'm not sure I should even try it.
Can corn be grown in containers? My containers are fabric pots. It seems like every time I watch a video, I see something else I want to try to grow in a fabric pot.

Alright I love the corn lesson. did not know that about corn. very interesting. Okay so I have planted corn 2 times in my life, with the first time was not good at all, didnt grow very good at all. Well this crop is growing very well except for the fact that it is not very tall. It has gotten about waist tall and has the pollen thing on top. How do I get my corn to grow tall? It's all a beautiful shade of green and just gorgeous but it's very short lol please help: ) thanks

1. Start with fresh corn seeds for the best results.
2. Directly sow seeds approximately 1. 5 to 2 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart.
3. Cover with soil, space your rows of seeds 30 to 36
inches apart.
4. Water your block of corn well after planting.
5. Corn stalks are sturdy and should not need staking.

GREAT TIPS FOR HOME GROWERS: And sadly, while the farmers in the mid west or the corn growers in fact attempted or did plant most of what they normally planted. Current and prevailing Conditions has precluded most of the plants from silking or silking correctly. so guess what. Corn harvest/yields will be far below normal.

I struggle with worms in my corn. Its my first year with corn and I didnt know about worms until I saw exit holes and poo. The worms were big because we waited too long to harvest and they had a buffet. My second batch of corn also has worms, but they are really small! And not much damage done yet. What to do.

I read that Boron levels in the soil also affects pollination, indicating trace minerals are as important as the macro nutrients. Also understand sulfur is an important element during the growth and plant development stages of corn.

Hello were plotting out a 3, 000 plant section at our community, do you recommend potash or ammonium nitride to get the soil nitrogens to sustainable levels, the moisture here is high in acidity apparently cause of limestone.
Thanks

Tip #5: Corn loves nitrogen and is a heavy feeder. If your stalks are spindly or the plant is yellowing it needs some nitrogen. Don't let it get this way by adding looks of good organic matter and lots of organic nitrogen.

If your doing small scale, less then 50 plants, I personally will go out and hand pollinate ( bend over the tables and rub it on the sills) yeah it's a little extra work, but it's well worth it in the end

Do you have to detassel home grown corn stalks?
I remember as a kid going through acres of farm fields detasseling every other row of corn. Not sure what the difference between farm grown/home grown.

Whaaattt? Each individual strand of corn silk is pollinated? That's crazy! Well, I should have watched this before planting my corn because I planted them in a straight row in my backyard.

If you plant too shallow, don't fret too much; Once the stalks are about a foot tall or more, mound up dirt around them about an inch or so, to compensate for the shallow seed depth.

I had a epic fail with corn this year! I had ants which brought aphids. Maybe it was the other way around, either way no corn! What can I do to deter the ants and aphids! Please help!
