Grow Great Tomatoes! Here's how I plant and prune tomato plants for a healthy, bountiful harvest! Today I'm talking about the difference between indeterminate and determinate tomatoes and planting a raised bed with different heirloom and hybrid varieties! I like to plant my tomatoes deeply, and prune them up to where there are no leaves on the bottom 12 inches of the plant. I also remove the suckers. I plant them 24 inches apart and tie them to stakes as the season progresses. Don't plant members of the nightshade family in the same spot year after year. Practice crop rotation to avoid soil born disease. Happy Gardening!

Excellent video, many thanks for sharing your expertise. I would like to grow my tomatoes from seeds to save money and just for the experience. I noticed that you are using store-bought plants. Is it reasonable to grow plants from seeds that have been saved from the prior years' crop or is it far wiser to buy store-bought seeds from a good source? Why?

I didn't know what VFN stood for until today! I planted 5 varieties of which I can only remember 2, Cherokee Purple and Bonnie's Best. I also staked and pruned for the first time and having great success! I should be able to harvest in a week or 2. Zone 8b. Thanks for the info!

So timely and informative! Just getting ready to plant tomatoes this weekend. I especially appreciate the tip about pinching the suckers off.

Great information! So much I didn't know about planting tomatoes! Any suggestions for a tomatoe plant that would do well in a pot on my porch?
