Moving a HUGE hosta!

When you wake up at 5: 30 am you move a 180 pound hosta, right? Wait, doesn't everybody do that? Alexandra: I can so relate to this! I believe I have the same variety. I have divided it twice in three years. This spring I also had to call my husband to help. I was so tired after getting it out and moved I didn-t have the strength to plant it. Days went by and it sat in the wheel barrel. Finally I realized it was too late and it was bound for the compost pile. Dumped it roots side up. Three weeks later I turned it over and it was growing leaves all smashed and deformed. This poor hosta wanted to live so badly. I found the energy to dig a whole and plant her. Took her about week or two to straighten out. Now would never know the trauma this plant went she looks beautiful! Yours looks perfect in her new spot!

I love my Empress Wu Hosta! Mine was often damaged by late frost until I started making an effort to protect it. As soon as the hosta begins to appear I keep an eye on the weather. If the temps are expected to dip below 40 degrees I cover the hosta until more favorable conditions are expected. I have experimented using different protection methods. So far the very best way was just covering the plant gently with a flat bed sheet; usually I remove the sheet as soon as the sun comes out the next morning. Works like a charm!

This May I dug up my -Paul-s Glory- hosta which is 4 years old-it was huge-. so I thought, no problem to divide it-. Wrong! I thought I was digging to China it was soooo deep-. almost broke the shovel to lift it out because the clump was bigger than a basketball-. with a ton of dirt around it-. it took a spade and a hammer and knife to divide it into thirds-replanted in 3 locations and so far all are doing really well-I do water them well-. I thought I-d killed it, but so far so good.

I was looking forward to seeing how you moved this hosta knowing how heavy moving a plant like that can be. I'm in my 70's and still moving plants, but one that heavy I think I would have had to dig it up as much as possible, cut it into sections with a sawz-all and move each one separately. If I want something done I figure a way, but it's getting a lot harder to do. More power to you young lady, your gardening skills are really beautiful to watch.

What a trip back in time for me. In my 20's I would be in the garden before the sun rose, and I was always trying to move large plants by myself. Almost 50 years later, I struggle to get into the garden before noon, and procrastinate moving any plant bigger than gallon sized. Keep doing those big projects now, so you can enjoy your dream garden later in life!

Thanks, I have a huge hosta. Big Daddy, that needs moved also. Thinking of moving it in sections so I can make maybe 3 or 4 big plants. my hostas have spread so much. I have many varieties. Tiniest being mouse ears, to Big Daddy, blues, greens, many variegated

I have a blue one that is that size and mine is called Elegans. Last year mine measured 5x6 feet. I'm afraid to move mine, but I think when they first come up would be a lot easier. Yours is beautiful and you did a great job!

Danielle I thought you were going to have to rent a crane to remove that beast of a Hosta-. So glad this video popped up because I need to remove a few now and I don't want to wait until Fall. Thanks for the inspiration

Do giant hostas need to be divided too? I have 4 that the previous owner of the house left. I learned that hostas in general need to be divided. But I couldn't find any information about giant hostas being divided.

Well it looks beautiful there of course, but it looked beautiful up front too (: I would have just bought another Hosta and planted it where I wanted it. Any excuse just to go to the nursery and see what-s new(:

Oh my word, Danielle! What an impressive feat that was. Also impressive is how your garden has developed since you moved this hosta. In two short years, you have transformed it into such a beautiful space! -

I have several that are that big and I dig around them the best I can then get hubby to cut the clump with a sawzall into more manageable size. Same with my large grasses. That was a project!

Looks great. Could be a hosta sieboldiana -elegans-. Do you know the variety of the german irises next to it in its original location? They looked so lush and with a nice uniform colour.

I would love to see you move that small variegated hosta behind that big mama you just moved. She hides that pretty little variegated hosta and she was to pretty to be hide.

It looks stunning in its new home! Did I see ostrich ferns in the front? If so, do you find them invasive? Would love to plant some but worry about spreading.

I love the fact that you showed us real life -
How many times have I thought oh I'm going to. And have to have more hands LoL

Thanks for the heads up as I have an Empress Wu which is only a year old so I have to make sure that-s exactly where I want it!

Love these kind of videos. Very inspirational. I've got some perennials I'm going to move when the rain stops.

Boy Danielle, that was an enormous job with that huge hosta. Well done! Do you recall the named variety?
reply

Beautiful Hosta. I hope mine will grow up to be like that. However something is munching on the leaves.
