Succession planting cut flowers may seem confusing or overwhelming, but once you get into the habit of planting for a continuous harvest, rather than a once a done harvest you'll be on the road to consistent blooms all season long

I am in the same zone as you. probably live only about 30 minutes from you as I saw in one of your videos you went to Ken-s garden center which I love! I put in 5 flower beds 26- x 3- and I wanted to know how often do you water? I have sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, snapdragons and poppy-s. But I-m so confused about -water 1- a week. - How often and how much do you water? Thanks so much!

I am growing procut sunflowers for the first time, I didn't realize you only get one flower per stem? Is that what you said? So how close do you plant them together? Does the plant not get as big as a regular sunflower or branching sunflower? Last year I grew a ton of branching sunflowers and the plants grew huge and took up alot of space for just one plant.

Try getting procut orange excel they-re faster than regular procuts. I-m also doing Queen lime series all three colors. Good luck this season! I planted two sunflower seeds in October and they came up in April like a hardy annual! I-ve tried using human hair around the sprouts and nothing bothered them. Try using human hair! Lol

You are such a talented gardening educator! I love your videos. I actually made an inexpensive seed starting shelf and light set-up using your videos for inspiration and education! I now have so many things in my gardens grown from seed! I have also shared with others! It is very rewarding! Thanks for all you're doing!

Thank you so much for this info! Just getting to sow a second wave of sunflowers due to rabbits mowing down my entire first wave -Where did you get your watering can? It seems to be a lot more ergonomic than the typical cans, including the one I have. Thanks again!

This video is excellent! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and garden with us!
Do you ever have a problem transplanting your sunflowers? I heard they don-t transplant well, but a family of quail is decimating every seed I plant, so I-m looking to start inside.

Hi Danielle, unrelated question but I'm not sure where to ask: has your vitex shown signs of life yet? I'm on season 3 and I think I remember that last year it was a little slower than other shrubs but can't recall for sure. I'm zone 6 in Ohio and similar weather.

I have never done succession planting and I'm wondering what you think about direct sowing succession planting. is this okay? . I have the space to direct sow and in all honesty, I am intimidated about transplanting and the time involved with hardening off.
reply

Can you just direct sow snaps in the ground or should you always start in trays indoors? I-ve never started sunflowers indoors but I may because I think some critters are getting some of mine likely birds because only a handful of what I planted came up.

I-ve done a little succession planting, some of my 2 week successions stretched to 3. definitely a good idea to do gladiolus successions, since I have hundreds of corms! Loved this video, so informative. Can I ask, how on earth do you keep up with the weeds?
reply

First I thought succession planting was where you planted in the same area. It seems you plant in another area. What if you don-t have much garden area/space? Dig up the old? How do you know when the older plants will stop producing flowers? -

Flower farming certainly is alot of planning and time management! Thank you for sharing your successes with us. Would you consider doing a video specifically on how you garden organically as a certified pollinator friendly garden?

wow, i loved this video! it was so useful for me to know how much land you are gardening on and how many bouquets you can produce a week. i love that you-re growing cut flowers in the landscape. your videos are so relaxing!

I don't have any luck to plant seeds indoors or containers. Do you need to have the lights to plant seeds indoors? I seem to have much better luck to plant the seeds directly in the ground.
Thank you for your help!

I love your videos. I-m
Not a cut flower seller but I am starting a very small cutting garden for myself. You are so informative and very honest about your why and how to achieve your business goal. Thanks.

reply

OMG, I learned so much from you. just can't thank you enough.
What are your thoughts about succession planting if we garden as a hobby, but not for biz? Should we do it less frequently or not at all? Thanks!

reply

Do you have any probems having your cats using your bulb patches and garden beds as litter places? I have been having problems where my cats ruin all my recently transplanted plants and it's heartbreaking LOL
reply

Is it possible to leave your seedlings outside (while waiting on germination) since it's warm enough now? I was hoping I was done with the heat mat and indoor grow lights for awhile
reply

Thanks Danielle for another informative video. Even though my cut flower garden here in New Zealand is for my own pleasure - I have had so much valuable information from you. Take care.
reply

I'm definitely struggling with succession planting. The dang crows keep eating every seed I put out. - ordered bird netting to put over the beds until the sunflowers get much bigger.
