In this video, I explain how to get close to wild animals, why I hunt bear and show some encounters with bear. RatdogDRB: Having been a bear guard in the arctic of Alaska for about a decade (in my younger years, I found my heart racing when in the presence of polar bears (even while armed with a 12 ga. and Breneke slugs. Right behind them were interior grizzlies. In general, they have to compete more for their food than coastal brownies, though half the size. Just a tad behind them, the coastal brown bear. generally, not quite as aggressive as the interior cousin. but twice the size and extremely powerful. And, the black bear.
The only problem I have with the advice from the experts (and their pamphlets) when being around bears. bears can't read and don't know how they're supposed to follow the script. LOL Some are just inherently mean, some are timid. Some have a nagging toothache, some just haven't eaten in too long of a period of time. Some, have had their butt kicked time and again from every other larger bear, and are in a foul mood and will take it out on the next smaller being they find.
General rules apply, generally. It's those exceptions to general behavior for species that one must keep in remembrance in the back of their mind. Bells, noisy walking, spray, are all good things. However, sometimes, NOTHING beats a solidly constructed projectile for breaking down an animal.
Generally speaking (concerning the general public, common sense needs to become common once again.

I would love nothing better than to see a mama and her cubs. I am hoping that I'll be able to just that in about a year or so. when I purchase my first RV. I have long wanted to see more of nature and that is at the top of my wish list. I think they are beautiful animals. I'm not interested in using them for food, in my case. I just want to see one and enjoy watching them interact with one another. I have a curious question though. what does bear meat taste like? Is there any other meat taste that it is a little like? I really appreciate your advice too about how to react around them. black bears have long been thought of as non-aggressive, so I wouldn't want to see one of them harmed because someone just got scared. thanks Shawn for the message and the footage of them. Take care. you and your family and Cali!

Once while I was walking the Appalachian trail from Clingman's Dome to Siler's Bald in the Great Smoky Mountains on my way to Hazel Creek to do some trout fishing, We decided to get a few winks on a grassy hill [Siler's Bald] It was a couple of hours until daylight. When I awoke I saw a empty can of Vienna Sausage I had eaten and had laid down a couple of feet from my head. The can was crushed and had either teeth or claw marks in it and there was a set of big bear tracks in the grass within a couple of feet from where I had laid my head. I have never tried that little adventure again. You may call it scared or apprehensive or whatever, but it was scary to contemplate what could have happened.

have you ever experienced predatory behavior from a black bear? Although it is very rare, it does happen. When ever I go on a solo canoe trip in bear country I take my shot gun as a precaution. Search fatal black bear attack on wikipedia and you will find a list of fatalities, many happened in Ontario. A common theme in many of the deaths was the person was by themselves and in remote a remote area. A few attacks that stick in my mind are 1. Jacqueline Perry Missinaibi Lake Provincial Park 2. Sebastien Lauzier cochrane ON 3. Raymond Jakubauskas & Carola Frehe algonquin park 4. George Halfkenny Mark Halfkenny Billy Rhindress algonquin park

the black bears there must be different than the ones we have here in north central arizona. every year they post warning signs about bear in the area. one year there were 3 attacks in a month. one couple was camping and a black bear ripped open their tent and slashed the woman pretty bad. a utah boy scout was dragged from his tent and killed. they have no fear of people and wander right thru our neighborhoods and into our town park.

We have black bears here in the Panhandle of Florida. A mother reported that there are too many bears in the area and she said someone is going to get hurt before authorities do something about it. Her teenage daughter was walking her dog when a black bear attacked her, pulling her into the ditch on the side of the road. She was mauld pretty bad. So there are always exceptions.

Everybody is an expert whenever bears come up. I've only had about a dozen encounters where I wasn't inside a vehicle. I've always had the opportunity to back off, that said, I don't rush to judge people who use force during encounters. It's easy to talk about what you would have done if you were there, but unless you were there then it's largely just that, talk.

Blackies are moving in to my area of the state and im glad for it but many people are afraid of them because they have not had to deal with them until now. People need to be weary of them but not terrified. They may come in to a cookout to investigate the smells and will certainly get into garbage or bird feeders and such.

Thankyou for you knowledge.
We don't have BEARS in Australia.
We do have lots of snakes that are highly dangerous, and Crocodiles etc.
All lve ever seen in movies is of Bears killing humans, until l watched a Doco about Bears.
Such beautiful animals, yet to be left alone at a distant.
And respected!
