I had laying hens. There are a variety of types of chicken that serves three purpose
1. Egg layers 2. Ground keepers to eat the bugs unwanted near the cabin and cook area. 3 Roasters the continue to grow about 2 years really fat very good to cook
If you get a rooster to sustain the population make sure he stays alone or with the roasters.
I have learned over the years that most chicken feed are not good, always use high grade corn meal and you will taste the difference rich yolk for cooking eggs and roasters.
To keep chicken in a holding pen outdoors please make sure its secure, use triple layered chicken wire 3feet under ground that nails on the 4 sides of the overhang to secure a safe walking space outdoors for the chickens. Grounds can always be reproduced for bugs.

Shawn. Im in Sudbury, - were almost neighbours. and I was born a couple hours north of Gravenhurst, so I REALL; Y relate to your shallow soil issues. My veggie garden is 1200 sq. Ft. And every shovelful down to 16 has been through a 1/2 screen. The guy who dug my basement with a huge Koehring shovel said it was the most difficult ground he ever dug - recessional moraine. Big bonus is that I did that when I was only 30. 75 now. and that does make a little difference in my strength and energy levels. but I still get up every day ready to do whatever I can towards my own level of self-sufficiency.

I've watched 4 video's of this amazing 'creation' of a Cabin, Unfoldment. I do wonder where does he bathe? In the summer I can see, jumpin in the crik, the stream, the pond, the river. but not in the winter! a spot bath, in side with heated water, a small tub, to wash from, maybe? just one of many things people wonder about, but usually dont ask, while witnessing this beautiful life you've created, man. you're awesome and inspiring, too!

I'm binge watching old episodes because I didn't know about you until a few months ago when I stumbled across a video. I am curious as to why not have a very small greenhouse with raised beds (in wooden boxes) where you control water & soil? You could have winter vegetables & start seedlings early. Maybe an 8x8. Have you considered that?

It never ceases to amaze me, how you can take a gigantic log (a huge damn log) lying in the forest, covered in ice and snow, looking like it would take four adults to carry; and drag it about by yourself, debark it, set it nicely in place and hack the top off so it is flat. amazing.

I get backaches just watching you work, Shawn! What an incredible accomplishment and a gift to all of us who follow you. What youve built all on your own, and youre still thinking about future projects, is extraordinary!

Some possibilities for growing on acidic soil- blueberries and elderberries, my grandparents land in Wisconsin is sandy next to bluffs, so lots of blackberries, raspberries, and blackcaps seem to grow great!
