Growing Potatoes in Moose Manure Off Grid Gardening in Nature

This week, I collect moose droppings from around the forest, including alongside the First Nations longhouse where a couple of moose have been hanging out over the past year. My lower garden is beside a stream that runs behind my log cabin and is a popular crossing spot for moose, deer, bear and wolf so there is plenty of manure in the area that I can use for compost. Good soil is not plentiful here, so I need to build up the organic composition with wild animal manure, green manure, water plants, fish, bird and animal remains and anything else that breaks down quickly. I will continue to compost these organic materials in a large compost pile with leaves and branches making up the bulk of the material. With three separate gardens, I have built redundancy into our food system, which includes not only the cultivated gardens but also consists of wild edibles - meat, fish, fruit and vegetables from the forest, lakes and rivers that surround us here in Ontario Canada. In the newest forest garden that I'm currently developing, I have planted potatoes in leaf litter, forest soil and moose manure as well as many other cool weather vegetables that can be grown before the last frost of the season - spinach, beets, carrots, peas and alliums. In the coming weeks, I'll finish building a bear and wolf proof chicken coop and I'll plant the warm season vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, beans and more by the end of May

I did carpenter work for years and concrete formwork; And I grew a couple thousand trees, and a few gardens. Now i have a bad right shoulder. Seperated AC whatever, but it's a bigtime hindrance now. So watch those joints. A torn AC or herniated disk can make you old before your time. You multitask well and that may help you run like it were a marathon as opposed to a sprint. But things do need to be done in a timely fashion.

What an amazing idea! I wish i could move to Canada, my dad was from Victoria, BC, and served in the Merchant Navy during the war. The two reasons I do not move to Canada are gun control and I will never bow down to a monarch.

If you have an extra barrel fill it with water uphill from your beds and then fill it with cut nettles. Once they begin to rot it is better than merical grow for your veggies

It would be a good idea to build a soil pile mix it together, a good mix and let it sit for a year, turn it over every 2-3 months, look out for black fungus. TH

peeling logs Shawn, would a spud not be easier on you. I took a between job for a log builder and when peeling logs only used spuds, and drawknife for touch up.

I love gardening videos. I'm glad that even though you're not experienced in gardening, you want to learn and try growing your own food. Happy gardening!
