Building a Loft in my Off Grid Log Cabin in the Woods with Salvaged Materials

Using rough sawn lumber and salvaged tongue and groove pine flooring, I build a sleeping loft in my log cabin, complete with book shelves and an operating window for ventilation. SWAMPHUNTER644: I hope you are considering stairs into your loft. Cali can't climb a ladder. A ladder may be fine in your 50's and even into your 60s but arthritis, gout, neuropathy and other age related ailments will make you curse a ladder in your 70s and 80s, especially coming down. Urinals and chamber pots will be needed also and heaven forbid you need laxatives. Whether you realize it or not, you are on the cusp of old age. Consult an older friend and incorporate their wisdom into your design. If your wife lives with you, I'm sure she won't appreciate having to climb a ladder.

here's a thought for the loft way up. attic folding stairs. when needed you pull a cord and the stairs fold down and you get a proper set of stairs with fold up hand rails. when your done with the bed lift it up and its out of the way.
.
no wonder it's bloody cold here today. you got the bloody window open close the window it's cold inside LOL
.
feb 3rd and it-s -32c apparent temp. yep close da window you let out all the heat

Been following you for several years and have found your quirky design and craftsmanship quite amazing. Hard to know what is next to build out the cabin, but why not locate the loft in the center where there is actually some usable headroom? Shelves as presently built would look great on the two sides. left open to allow light to pass from the upper window, and visual transparency. Thanks for the years of enjoyment.

Most excellent. Wanted to watch on my lunch break at work. but was too long. unless - I watch at double speed. Wow SJ, you can really hustle! LOL! I bet you wish you could cut through those boards as fast as 2X. As for the interior, you are making many viewers jealous. Love the loft. Window right there. Awesome. A pleasure to watch as usual. Now back to work(me, you, others. lol)

Well yeh, I kinda expected you to reveal this earlier, but then I'm pretty sure it's me. I'm in a bit of a hurry. I asked about a loft because of incoming family on Holidays, or having to stay over, because of bad weather, etc. I think I was busy putting the horse ahead of the cart, kinda thing. I'm looking forward to watching and listening to you again. A Brthr in CHRIST.

Now Cali what you need to ask Dad is for him to build you a ramp that goes round the cabin and upwards so that you can share his space and not feel lost down there with your back to the logs. And he has not even given you a blanket to cover yourself over with when temperatures drop really below zero, so my advice: Nick a spare Deer hide and make it yours alone.

That was a most enjoyable watch. It s really beginning to take shape and each week that passes feels more like a home. That weather tho, not for me but like everything else I suppose you get used to it. Cali was so sweet the way she nestled her head on your shoulder and understood everything you were saying to her. Well done. Take care, be safe. Dorset, UK

As I press play I noticed that I really have to stop & watch your progress since you don't explain things as you do them. I just can't press play and know what's happening with the build.
I know I'll never build a cabin in forest but I sure do love the scenery you provide us with. loving the progress it looks amazing both inside & outside stay warm.

I think Canadian snow is more polite and gentle when it falls. It's a good feeling to know that Shawn James will be the leader of all good peoples left after the apocalypse - I won't be there to see it personally as I can barely change a light bulb; nonetheless, it will be nice to possess that good feeling when the time comes. Thanks for sharing.

So great to see you got yourself a pair of laurentian chief moccasins for after hrs. lounging inside. I've had a pair for 2 decades + and only JUST now starting to wear through the moose hide bottoms. Be sure to re-stitch the seems with dental floss when they do start to come apart - you'll get yourself another decade + with a floss stitch.

The loft is perfect! Heat rises from the stove so should be quite comfortable for sleeping. I m sensing your better half is joining you soon Bookshelf acts as a privacy barrier too! You can design how you finish it off inside and finish at your own pace. No real rush B Deacon Manitoba Canada

Shawn James I love the look of the boards on the inside walls. I'm talking to my 18 y/o grandson that's working in a sawmill about building a small cabin on his dad's property, he just needs to know he can do it. I love your videos they relax my body and mind. Thanks so much!

Every Friday I look forward to your videos! Looking beautiful, cozy, and at home! Job well done, Shawn. Maybe you could build rustic boxes to hold ample fire extinguishers throughout the inside and outside of cabin and loft area. Just a thought. Take care.
