Building a Bookcase Wall and End Table, My Off Grid Log Cabin Interior is Almost Finished

Using a combination of rough cut pine, walnut and birch and tongue and groove cedar, I build a bookcase wall to separate the living room from the bathroom and an end table to support a lamp, books, card games. With cold February temperatures testing the comfort of the off grid log cabin, the wood stove proves to be up to the task of heating the space and the mass of the logs retains it well, with morning temperatures in the cabin remaining quite warm. Josanne: Well I am sure that U are unbelievable with your days in doing everything you want. U are beautiful. only one thing U have to know. well the stove is really dirty. I know, I know that u know but for me being a women I really want a beautiful clean oven. oh well this is the only thing that you do all day is that oven. unless the oven is hot so u can't do this right now. So my observation/question for this week is the wood that you put into an container and then put that container into your stove to burn the wood. After the wood was burned, you took it out of the stove and moved it into a new container. Then, there was nothing else shown or said about purpose of these efforts. Was this a) your most impressive accomplishment to date or b) an all work and no play makes Shawn a dull boy moment? :P Really, I am quite curious what that was all about! On another note, the cabin sure is shaping up nicely! Now I'm just hoping that its builder is alright. :)

IT HAS been amazing watching you over the past few years, especially this cabin, from the day you laid it out to this video here, where you begin to make it your own. always great content, and if I may look into the Foxfire Book, it's actually a series of book written about mountain folklore and how to do things, I think you would find it interesting. I worked on book 4 and 5. done by high school students interviewing old folks in the mountains of north georgia, and this area. check it out. great video here!

I live in a log cabin in Wisconsin. I have my over size leather chair directly in front of my Soap Stone wood stove. Nothing more relaxing than to set and watch the fire burn when it below zero or in the middle of a big snow storm and having a nice hot cup of coffee with my Newfoundland dog curled up near by. Your set up in front of your stove is awesome. I know you and your best friend will spend many memorable hours enjoying the warmth and companionship! A great job of making your cabin so homey!

Just watched the new video and have been enjoying seeing the progress on the cabin. I think it would be cool if you had another My Self Reliance sign right above your chairs and next to the new bookshelf. You do a lot of shots there and it would look good in the background. Have a blessed day and thanks for sharing your videos.

Shawn is getting ready for life after the apocalypse state. No power tools, watching reruns of the wood burning on the big screen. I love this but I got to say this
he's getting ready we are not. We will not survive a life with out internet or tv never mine a life a worse scenario.

Hard to believe I'm watching your Second cabin build. You can always tell a Master of trades when they make it look so easy. What a Beautiful legacy Mr James. I hope you left clues and treasures for those who in 150 years come to restore your home and make it theirs.

I got a laugh out of the book case, it reminded of the first book case I built, the only books that would fit in mine were Readers Digest. I should have picked a taller book to space shelves. Ha Hah. Shelves just need to different sizes I guess.

I dream of escaping city and live like you. Love your videos, they calm me down. I've never told anyone about this dream because I am certainly sure they would think that I lost my mind or I have mental illness.

Question for My Self Reliance: So many people come to your pages for inspiration, wonderment and the vicarious joy of seeing you fulfill one challenge after another. Where do you typically find inspiration?

Very important to store your literature right outside your head. Timing is important when selecting your reading material and you can't be inefficient in your movements.

Thank you for the video Shawn! I also wear an Outback coat very similar to yours, do you treat the outside of yours with anything? Your videos are like therapy for me.

I'm happy you are able to use the last of Winter to build your creature comforts. Everything you touch turns to art. BTW there's a certain apple that is MIA.

It's looking beautiful and cozy, would love to see a tour of the inside? Just wondering are you able to have a vacuum in the cabin? It became your workshop!
