building a tribe is a lot of work but worth it you are planting trees that following generations will live is the shade you and others have created! traditional split rail fences are best implemented with concrete posts which are railed through pipe sleeves in the posts! allow me to explain the rails are permanent and strong as stone the rails can be wood, or pipe filled with grout or whitewashed with lime whitewash! in the past lime was a useful commodity! Looking at your sisters home it is likely they have a primitive kiln somewhere on the property right now! this was done in a wood or charcoal kiln because in growth and forestry management require culling and widow maker removal! Fire is the likely outcome of such work! and field stones are subject to removal! cooking and slaking such stone make chink, lime base for plasters, mortar, whitewash and so forth! A primitive kiln produces cooked limestone and cooked stone to slake! once barreled it never spoils and is useful in wood preservation! I saw a railed fence in upstate New York with such a cement post with pipe sleeves installed horizontal to the ground! it was very solid as the rails were installed, they were wedged and whitewashed! They of course ran cattle! The whitewash preserves the rails and posts were repaired from cracking due to weather as was the wooden rails! eventually with trips to the scrap yard wooden rails could be replaced with horizontal pipes through the sleeves. steel pipe filled with grout would stop a brahma bull regularly! longevity is the key to a successful home stead! As you age the wash rinse and repeat competes with adding useful infrastructure! Always something to do and generational tasks accomplished are solid gold investment for the future!

North America is setting atop an ocean of oil. It is NOT a fossil fuel, just more of the rich elites lies so they can drive up the prices and throw out the occasional shortage scare. Supposedly the deepest fossil was found at 16, 000 feet. We've drilled for oil double that distance. It was the Rockefeller who 1st said medicine could be made from petroleum and he made lots of money doing. The rich have corrupted and lied to us from day 1. Living like Shawn is doing was the same way my grandmother lived. We didn't have running water till I was 3, over 60 yrs ago. So, you see not much time has passed but, a lot of changes have occurred. Stay away from petroleum based meds, eat healthy, live right and ground yourself daily.

love what you do shawn and have watched for years. my concern is though it appears there is only one male (you) with 3 homesteads to take care of. being in your 50's you have at best another decade of being able to sustain intense labor. then what the fact is that the percentage of people capable/willing to live the lifestyle you have chosen is statistically almost non existent (in spite of all the online chatter. without intending to offend, as i see no other males in the picture, females alone are not the answer. please don't take offense at my post, it comes from a serious concern that all of your hard work and dedication comes to naught.

I think he nailed it when he said. solar for when fossil fuels will be too expensive. That is the elephant in the room regarding land ownership and self sufficiency. I believe the goal of the string pullers is to make it too expensive for this type of lifestyle. There will be unbelievably high land, water and air taxes in the future. They are working toward control over all land and all physical attributes of land. The plan is to tokenize every major object in the natural world. Creeks, lakes, mountains, forests, etc. AI will enable them to do it. Far fetched you say. just wait.

Canada has a lot of land and a small population compared to the US. Solar energy requires a lot of land. According to the MIT authors, powering 100 percent of estimated U. S. electricity demand in 2050 with solar energy would require roughly 33, 000 square kilometers (sq-km or 12741 square miles) of land. That’s if we spread solar panels evenly across the entire country. If we concentrate solar production in the sunniest regions, the total land footprint falls to 12, 000 sq-km. There is less land for crops or animals.

Wonderful! I'm preparing to move out to our family cabin on land that has been in our family for over 100 yrs. It is on 90 acres in the Cherokee National Forest area and I am so happy to learn everything you show us! I won't have livestock, but I do hope to have chickens and a food garden as well as putting an off grid tiny cabin on the upper end of the land for family. So excited to finally be able to move into nature and be self-sufficient!

You do. great work and have a grand plan, but you do realize unless you get some help, you are going to have to live until you are 100 years old and be able to continue work the way you do now, until then. Especially since you are a bit of a perfectionist and it takes you a fair amount of time to do projects to your satisfaction. Just my observation, but you need some help with labor.

I am practising self reliance but with the health. My doctor gave me more doses with blood pressure pills to force the pressure down against the will of the body. Until I thought Na, not the way to do it. So I use the new technology that we do have for blood pressure and blood sugar cardiac exercise. I'm down from 160 down to 123 (133) using 25% medication. That's self reliance Baby

Still here Shawn. I have been back from South Korea for 4 years now.
We made a mistake. Our mistake was coming to Canada.
And yes. We will be returning to South Korea. But it will be difficult.
I will not stop watching Shawn James. even if I am in S. K.

Sounds like you have a lot of irons in the fire. Hope someone in the family is having boys, you're going to need them in the future to do all that work and time to train them with the skills required when you're too old to do it anymore. Good luck.

Whew, you’re going to be one busy and tired man remember to pace yourself, good thing that there is family there to help out when the going gets rough.
The master plan will be awesome one bite at a time congratulations on the new adventures.

Shawn, you're morphing into Indiana Jones lol
I really like seeing more of the homesteading, self-sufficiency and preparedness. There's a storm coming. Something wicked this way comes. Those with eyes to see and ears to hear can feel it.

Really nice my friend, love your content. Wish everyone the best of luck on all you do. Lot’s of hard work, but it will pay off in the end. You are a great inspiration to many people. Thank you very much. Your friend from Tennessee.

Ok, if you install solar panels. First install in a vertical position facing south. Then find the angle for best sun in the summer. Make adjustable rack to accomodate both positions. This will help in winter keeping snow off panels.

I hope your daughters have handy men by their sides as you will find out that aging is a pain. literally. You will be working yourself to an early seat on the porch if you try to do all of it by yourself. I wish you luck.

IT'S not funny, how they have taught people about gas and oil being a fossil fuel. Then later in life finding out it was a lie, seeing and finding the truth about gas and oil and realizing, its just a renewable resource.

I don’t understand how you have enough time to do all you are describing. I have a small home and yard and most of the time I feel overwhelmed with all the work it takes to keep it neat and tidy with no frills.

Hey Shawn, Maybe do a tie in with the show Barnwood Builders on this old cabin They would (no pun he he ) likely be interested in this property if it need any attention or repairs. Cali seems to approve of the place!

I've purchased 43 acres, installing multiple wells, solar systems, ground tube -a/c heating, and bio gas for cooking and hot water. Fish ponds, food, fruit orchards, and already producing commercial crops.
