My wife and I cook prime rib and squash in the wood stove on our off grid log cabin in the wilderness while we wait for winter to end and the snow to melt. I grill steaks on the woodstove in the outdoor kitchen as I screen in the kitchen just as the first crop of black flies hatches and attacks. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. those bolts gave me a good flash back to taking my first and only chopper flite.
i and another guy. big gurth of a dude. i mean dude green in the woods. he learned.
any way i was there when they poured the boxes with those big bolts they must of measured three or four times but when it came the time to use them. spot on mark. my part was done. another first and only time a float plane. that was a bumpy ride. kind of cool watching out the window the pilot was not in a hurry. one day that would be nice to do again. thank you for flashing that memory thank you.

Hello Shawn. It’s been a while since I had time to watch your video but the hospital in which I’ve been working has been busy with so much. It’s great to see you and your family have been doing well. As for me I haven’t been able to do any fly fishing due to the heavy winds but in 2 weeks that’s suppose to change finally and I’m ready. I see that you have been busy as well and starting on your master bedroom.

Shawn this was yet another great episode! I remember watching when you hand excavated that basement! And now finishing the outdoor kitchen and a master bedroom! Wow! What an exciting time. The screened in kitchen will be a great addition if you can leave the door open to the cabin. Thanks for letting us watch the journey. Kisses to Cali, bless her sweet heart

I'm so glad to be back looking over the shoulder, of quite possibly, if not, THE most interesting man in the world. Self reliance, stoicism, chivalry and escaping the geo-political exercises of our current times. Checking all the boxes my friend. Thank you! to you and your family for allowing this peek into your home. From Portland, Oregon. amongst the trees.

OMG, here I thought I was the only one cooking my hot water on my woodstove for doing my dishes. My new sinks just arrived, I ordered tub sinks/ triple from Canada Food Supply direct. They are all one piece of aluminum like hotel sinks, but with 3 sinks. I can fit my roasting pans inside of these sinks. I went all aluminum to avoid food contaminations.

Need to set up a gutter system that drains down into some water barrels with a bypass right above the barrel for if it gets full or for winter to drain the gutter system. If you put a ball valve on the bottom of the barrels, you can then fill smaller containers, or route some underground lines to gardens to keep moisture in the ground for small areas.

Your video's always inspire me Shawn and reminds me of my Dad. He was a carpenter in his day. I always helped him with woodwork around the house. He wasn't a pro (like youself) but he managed to get the job done. My Mom was his biggest supporter and critic.
Grace to you and your family sir and please don't stop putting out your vids.

We always roasted our squash cut side up, and filled them with sliced onion, crushed garlic, butter, rosemary and smokey hot paprika, then wrapped them in tin foil for the first 20 miniutes. Once they started to soften up, we pulled the foil and flipped them cut side down. Bacon grease was preferred, but we sadly had to cut back.

A good thing you got those screens finished; what a lot of flies right after the snow melted!
What is the kind of hold-it-in-place but easily opened closure called that you fixed at the bottom of the outdoors kitchen screen door It doesn't look like the magnetic closures I'm familiar with for indoor use.

Oh, up here, or rather down here in the UP, the black flies are out. We also have a bunch of determined hornets. May 15 deadline always. Did remove a standing dead from looming over the garage. Thanks, men! Maybe now I can get the electric company to bring the line up so my bill isnt $300 from the split off.

Nice to see the outside Kitchen is screened in and ready for cooking & dining comfort without the flies & bugs. I'm sure you will have a lot more enjoyable times out there in the warmer weather. Nice space for cooking, canning, preserving foods, and other projects. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

This is a good way to live in Canada now. Keep all the expenses low and harvest meat from the land. Carbon Tax Carney will be worse than Trudeau. Bunch of goomba voters up there. Argentina finally learned. It will take decades for Canada. California still has n't learned.

That sounds amazing, Shawn! Living off-grid in a self-built cabin surrounded by nature is so inspiring. Cooking on the wood stove and embracing the wilderness life must be so rewarding. Keep it up, and enjoy the peace of the forest as you wait for spring.

Outdoor kitchen with screen and the new door and shingles looks good starting to take shape.
Meals on this video you cook for your wife, and you look good. Wondering the meats cooked is that bear or moose. I like meals cooked with the small pumpkin.

I love the outdoor vintage cook stove, we used to have an old one on legs, it was a Detroit Jewel but sadly we didn't use it like you are. They were built tough for sure. With the screens the usefulness of the outdoor kitchen has been extended.

Cali spoiled Au contraire! Entitled, deserving and totally appreciated for her love and loyalty to you and yours. Considering her life span, if she finds comfort in dad'schair, let her be. and you did. Love watching you.

I have been waiting for you to start work on the kitchen again for a long time. Cooking is interesting but rather it was less and more on the tools. Love your videos. Cali looks like she has recovered from her leg injury.
