Building my home in the wilderness is incredibly peaceful and relaxing despite the extra effort and difficulty of working alone. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. There's really no point for me to comment on this project as everyone in the comment section has pretty well said what I was gong to say. I will say this: WOW Shawn it's so nice to watch you build something using wood, again. As far as the brick and concrete 'glorified work bench' you had there for a short time in the beginning, I thought you were building a fireplace. I then said to myself: Oh that's pretty cool that the bedroom will have it's own fireplace, but then I realized maybe you're not OR maybe you are Keep us guessing Shawn, but we all will find out in your next videos, and of course when you post your finished project video!

Still amazing. Watching you fabricate, cut, fit everything is mesmerizing. And you go the extra mile to make everything THE best. I have been watching for years and am still loving it. Thank you for taking all the time and effort to film, edit, and share this with all of us. I know how much trouble it is to keep the camera poised and get interesting shots. THEN to organize and edit all the pieces of the day into a continuous and coherent sequence of events, pure magic. Thanks again for all your work here.

I wish I were 20 years younger. I'd be giving you a run for your money. I'm really glad you do what you love. I've worked metaphorically for the man for 46 years. Raised my family. Have 9 Grandkids. Still have never done the things I've dreamed of. I'm trapped in a city of 150, 000, near a city of 600K. Love the outdoors, fishing, hunting, archery, kayaking. I have to make special trips to do these and not as often as I like. I would love to live it. Maybe in my next life, if there is such a thing.

Dumb question. Wouldn’t it be better and more efficient to NOT cut the rigid insulation and lay it down with supports before the floor joisting is put in You have the pieces of wood holding the rigid foam up, why not put a spacer in and install whole sheets instead of installing it between joists and cutting up the insulation, creating gaps. The entire bottom of the floor can be insulation that just needs taping together

I used to watch for years with my dog, then kinda forgot to watch. He died July 31st last year. Saddest day of my life, year really. New puppy March 1st this year, he is sleeping in the other room on the floor. No one tells you after the 1st one, you have a comparison now. My last one used to be right by me at all times, even when I slept. This one doesn't do that. Same room at most.

Shawn, love watching the videos as always. Lots of respect for your hard work. I would like to suggest you put some type of fresh air in for what i assume is a masonry fireplace. Id hate to see you have smoke issues/ lack of oxygen, especially in your bedroom. If it is a manufactured fireplace a fresh air is required regardless. Just don't want to see terrible happen!

Well done Shawn on an amazing project you are on. The bedroom is going to be fantastic. And very warm in Winter with all that insulation in the floor. Looking forward to the next instalment. You got so much done this time your ideas and workmanship is commendable. I just don’t know what else to say but you sure are an inspiration. From Australia

With all respect for you and your work - she will not leave in the woods, without running water, bathroom but with the tons of insects. Despite your love and the greatest efforts. I remember building an addition to your old cabin - office for your wife. I am a woman, believe me - no woman would enjoy these conditions longterm.

oh that floor is going to be cozy looks like about a r30 of insulation. if you have in floor heating from the fireplace and a water tank. you can even have hot baths showers and what not.
those super white boards on the one end are they white pine. self milled or store bought

I dont see anything but negatives by putting plastic down under the floor. Not sure why those Canadians do that. No flashing between the masonry and wood is gonna be a problem too. Staggered subfloor joints are better too but on something that small it probably doesnt matter.

I like the idea that you are framing the addition and not hefting big logs (that you do so well. You will merge the two styles together so it looks like a part of the Master Plan (which it may have been. Always great to see Cali working with you. Mac

Amazing work! Watching you build this cabin bedroom addition alone shows true skill and dedication to DIY, off-grid living, and woodworking. It really inspires anyone who dreams of self-reliance. How do you manage the toughest partlifting and framing walls solo

Mike Holmes and his daughter and son make a wonderful construction crew but I've gotta say they have nothing over Shawn White. I'd be thrilled to have Shawn White to build me a complete home. His craftmanship is at the highest level, Kudos for you Shawn.

Next time lay out your girder and put your hangers on- while your board is still on the saw tables. See, then you can do it comfortably instead of bending over like that the whole time. Little things like that is what can really make the day go easier.

Love the show, Thank you.
Can you discuss flooring technique for cabins off ground Looks like you put foam board which is like vapour barrier on bottom and then plastic vapour barrier between subfloor and joist making double vapour barrier

Hey Shawn, Josh and Erin of Wild and Wonderful just released a new video of them visiting their 25 acre island in Nova Scotia for the 1st time. They hope to build a summer getaway there. Maybe you could talk to them and offer your opinion

bottomline you gotta trust yourself your vision and be consistent, doesnt mean that i have patience/work ethic to build any of this unless i was financially retired to buy some cabin and upgrade it, its better to live vicariously through these vids

Why are you using plastic, expanding foam and cement blocks. Shawn Have I missed a change of environmental attitude I haven’t tuned in for over a year, possibly 2 but this is not what I remember from previous viewings of your buildings.
reply

You are certainly a first class Master Builder, Shawn.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the bedroom cladding will be. I’m thinking it maybe similar to the Hen Palace/outdoor kitchen basethere for keeping the Log and rock theme going.

2 Ideas to read that you could also do to your Cabin. 1. Make a hidden secret storage container area on the floor again like you did in the other Cabin or more than one secret area 2. Screen In the Front Porch overhang sitting area.
