Building Alone in the Wilderness - Entrance from the Bedroom to the Log Cabin & Installing Windows

Similar to the day I cut the back wall of my old log cabin to connect it to the new bedroom addition, this week I removed the south facing window and opened the entrance from the main log cabin to the new master bedroom. I install three windows in the bedroom walls, chink the wood siding on the exterior and parge the chimney to prepare for the installation of round river stone. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. Are you staining the board siding I'm south of you around Emsdale and I have had a couple battles with carpenter bees this summer. Ants haven't been bad this year like they have been in the past few years. I've been building my dream wilderness homestead too, but weekend and vacation time is the only time when I can get at it. I have been hitting a wall and losing motivation. I'm almost complete but it's tough when I just constantly bust my behind pushing towards my goal. Its been a while since I have been able to tune in here. But again, you have renewed my motivation and my fire is burning hot again. Thanks Shawn

Shawn, I am currently building a 10x12 shed with wood I purchasing from an Amish saw mill. Oh my God is it heavy. I built the first wall and as a carpenter picked hundred if not more wall to stand up. This wall was so heavy it took me two hours to stand it up
The boards every size weigh about 4-5x what a normal dimension board weighs
I have a great respect for you and what you do even more after starting this
I sat by my self says Shawn would use a come along hooked to the trees
I thought a lot about you this past week
I truly enjoy watching you build. I love it.

Shawn I had an epiphany watching Cali collecting rocks at the end of your video.
I was thinking about every single rock that Cali purposely picked.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to take every one of those rocks and build a wishing well near your garden out of them
That way you’ll have something beautiful that Cali helped build and can cherish long afterwards.

Shawn do you have any kind of fire protection in place A buddy on the island uses a pto driven pump and a half dozen 2 inch hoses laid out around his compound. If your creek dries up in the summer you could dig a cistern and store several 1000 gallons in the spring. Also 4 sprinklers on the corners of your cabin would be a small cost for a lot of piece of mind.

While the addition looks really nice, I was struck by how out of place it is, and the architecture does not match the log cabin design. I hate to say it, but it looks like you didn't think through and properly plan the home before you started building it I have not been watching 100%, so maybe missed something. Soon Cali will have a nice big bed to enjoy!

Friendly comment, I mean no disrespect. Your wood siding on your bedroom addition the top board gapping is different. Maybe take a router to your top board and cut just enough out of it to match all the other Gaps. Hope you get this message. I hate when I make or create something then I see my mistake later when it’s too late to fix.

Hi Shawn, I've been following you for many years now and you've inspired me to embark on my own journey down the path of video photograph. Love what you do, love the outdoor and nature myself. If you could please share what software you use to produce and edit your video’s or recommendations. It would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Isn't that mortar (cement or lime - and if not lime why cement) going to pop out when the timber contracts and expands Is there a reason not to use caulking thanks for the vlog, a joy as always. Also (as a european) wondering why not shutters to keep the house warmer in the winter against the weather

Just curious. why you didn't place the fireplace on the opposite wall, toward the back of the cabin, so you could have two large windows facing the front Awesome job anyway! It's heartwarming to see you working and realizing your dreams. Your wife will be thrilled with this gift. All the best for you!

New addition to the cabin is taking shape. The fire place going to look good. Rocks would look nice on the fire place and out sides rocks would look good lower part of the addition and have tree trunk cut and have the lig look upper part of addition. Even out with the cabin plus the outdoir kitchen.

Shawn is would really be tempted to use a clear stain and dark mortar for the thinking. I love that light wood color with the dark lines in between.
Looks so good and cozy.
But whatever you do, it's going to look amazing. Everything you do always does.

I forgot about the idea I shared about those Beds that are built into the wall and get pulled down and then hide in the wall when not using them. Would be cool if you made something like that. My guess is you're just going to make a regular easy bedroom.

Hope you’re getting double/ triple extra points for the bedroom fireplace with Mrs. Goodness that’s a lot of extra effort in so many ways and maybe that’s why there are steps down because that lower area is going to act as a cold sump. Take care Shawn

I have been watching for the very beginning and can't help but wonder why would you have not just building the cabin with the floor space that you needed in the first place instead of stick building add-ons With the exceptions of the outdoor kitchen.
