Fishing for Aggressive Houndfish on the Flats in the Bahamas - 4K

I met Tommy at Old Bahama Bay Resort in the Bahamas and we decided to go fishing in the ocean for the very unusual and dangerous species of fish called a houndfish. Houndfish are a great sport fish, that will jump and make screaming runs, but they are also very dangerous and need to be handled with extreme care. I started the day off fishing with a piece of sardine for bait to catch the houndfish. After capturing and releasing several houndfish, Tommy tried to catch a houndfish using his fly fishing tackle. Unfortunately, the houndfish were not interested in the fly fishing lures. Tommy and I left the houndfish and started searching for the elusive permit along the shoreline. We found one big permit, but he wouldnt bite. We finished the day off catching houndfish and other species of fish on artificial lures.

I have been to the Bahamas 5 times, once in Nassau and four times to Freeport and being from Florida, nothing ever prepares me for how clear the water is down there. It just drives me nuts how beautiful it really is. Labadee, Haiti has the absolute clearest water I have ever seen though. The Virgin Islands has nice water too, but the water off of Haiti was just 50 feet down and you could see the bottom so clear.

If I'm not mistaken, the Hound is the same fish that we call a Gar in Southern Africa. I had fun catching them recently off the coast of Mozambique. It was quite difficult to get a hookup on the little spoon that I was using though. They tended to hit the spoon with the tip of the beak and drop it as soon as they discovered it wasn't edible. Soft plastics would have yielded better results. Great vid. Thanks.

These fish are awesome. The fight in them is amazingly freakish. Why people have marked them trash fish is beyond me. I have never caught them but every since i seen another you tuber catch one i was ready to go catch. Now i do have a question. How big do they get. I know Captain Foley said he caught a 20 pounder but how big do they get or does anybody really know?

BlacktipH hello i am shady from Alexandria Egypt this hound needle fish in Alexandria we fish it by casting float and live bait like shrimp it always cut the nylon line when it is hooked and i tried to use wire and leaders it always see the line and some how and does not come near them so are you using any special tackle

It looks like long nose gar fishing until it gets jumping. That would be awesome Next time try a jig head with nylon rope for the dressing. Just get the rope untwisted to make the lure. the unhooking could become challenging. Look into long nose gar fishing before you head back to the flats.

That looks like so much fun, as evident by you laughing. Tommy seems like a great guide too. Can you give us a run down on the lures you used on the spinner? Wanna give that shrimp a try. Usually just use the berkley gulped shrimp and here in San Diego.

I fish with wobler. Once i had a pike on and he joumped about 10yards in front of the boat. He shuck the hook out throwing it straight towards me. I ducked in time. It landed 30 yards behind the boat I'm teling you that fish was out to kil me

The first mate of a charter in Miami said that you are a bad fisherman and steal spots Josh. He said that after we were reeling fish pumping hard like you. It is the Josh Jorgensen technique. That first mate was so wrong. You are a fantastic angler.

These guys always show up when yellowtailing. They always get my blood pumping thinking I hooked the mother of all yellowtails, then I see them rocket out like baby marlins. Seems like they hang out way out at edge of chum slick
