Pulling up nothing but heads.
Couple years ago my family went fishing for out of Galveston TX. Captains name was Scotty and I swear he drank a case of Buds before we even got out into the gulf. anyways. I hooked the first snapper and reeled it it and to my concern it was bodyless. The next 10+ fish were all heads only. I asked what was eating our fish and Scotty said that it was probably Cudas and not to worry because once they got their fill they would move on. Well they did eventually and after that we limited eight per person for a total forty fish not including the Mahi, Mackerel and black tip sharks. I gotta say at the end of the day I was totally exhausted. On our way back we pulled up next to a shrimp boat sitting idle and traded a bottle of Jack and case of Buds for three twenty pound sacks of shrimp. I was super excited about the fresh shrimp until I realized that I would be cleaning them. All in all it was a totally awesome trip.
Crazy side thing. I had cell service 30 miles out in the Gulf? What's that about?

First rule of spearfishing is never band your gun till you are in the water.
That said, if you are going to spearfish the gulf, go in Winter when the algae bloom is gone, much better vis!

Darcy that spearfishing gun was too big they always give an awkward Riffe to beginners next time use a 90 cm Cressi sub comanche. Very easy to handle and maneuver underwater and accurate.
