Darci, as someone who has lost a kidney to cancer I can tell you a high protein diet with too much salt or potassium chloride (No Salt brand) is hard on the little pooch. Try a more starchy diet of something he may like. I have a high fiber/medium carb/low protein diet. The kidney I have left isn't 100%. Try small doses of Co-Q10 and milk thistle with sub-lingual B12 vitamin (Methyl-cobalamin not cyano-cobalamin B12. I brought my chronic kidney disease down from stage three to stage one by using those supplements with my diet. Again, small doses according to the little fellow's weight.
You were talking about teriyaki flavored pork loin? I cannot think of anything more injurious to the little guy. Too much salt and a hard to digest protein in the pork. My son is a DR. by the way and I am not trying to impress, he is big on proper nutrition to help his patients. Those that follow his advice do better.

At that age. 16 years old, there could be any number of reason why your friend has gone off feed. It comes down pretty much to old age. Kidney problems can affect how a dog will eat. Things that they would normally eat they will turn away from. I've always had German Shepherds. They went over the Rainbow Bridge at 12 years old. Smaller breeds can be with us longer. When my dogs got older I would give them boiled hamburger mixed with rice. It would sometimes help get their appetite back for awhile. I'm trying to be delicate here, your friends are old. Love them, enjoy this time with them. There may come a time, when you will have to make a very hard decision. They have been good friends for a very long time. The hardest thing we have to do, is to be the ultimate friend to them when the time comes.

We had a similar experience with our 16 (just shy of 17) year-old Cocker Spaniel. He would only eat people food during his geriatric years - cooked ground chicken/turkey/pork, rice, veggies, and fruit (blueberries/strawberries. Regarding veggies and fruit, maybe try pureeing them with chicken stock and throw in some spinach/kale and poor over the meal like a gravy. He also liked plain greek yogurt. Another thing that was recommended, however we never tried it, was canned tripe - it can be sourced in quality pet food stores. We were told that it smells pretty bad, but is one of the reasons dogs will eat it - and evidently it's good for them. Wishing you and your fur babies the best - thank you for being a loving pet owner - they need us most when they're at this stage in life.

Ha-ha! watching Darcy try to 'swing' the wet hair because is heavy. You guys are fun to watch. Feedback: You don't realize Bubba has been stalking and snacking on neighborhood cats when your not looking. so he's already FULL when your trying to feed him: -D He has been at it for several Months and still trying to eat what you give him too. but he's been VERY successful lately and just can't keep up with faking his hunger without giving away his cover story. :-D!

Our 14 year old Lab started being really picking with food too. We took her to the vet and had all the labs done. Nothing really stood out and the vet said sometimes they become finicky eaters as they enter old age. What works for us is we buy canned tuna and add just a little bit of the tuna in water into her dry food. She devourers it regularly. Hope this helps! Tight Lines!

I will not pretend to know the answer or give advice in this situation. I will say my wife had a small family dog that lived to be 19. He was a picky eater later in his life also. He was just given human food during his last years, and that was fine as he kept it down, and he ate enough. Those are some cute dogs. I wish them well

Baby Bubba is out on a limb. the branch is gettin' thin. my last Hound was a Min-Pin (minature pincher) made it to 16 1/2 my best friend. traveled all over Florida. he never backed down to anything or anybody. he'd piss on your foot if he didn't like you. weighed 8 pounds.

So silly so fun! You guys make me laugh. Hope your Bubba is ok. I had to feed my 16 yr husky, boiled, frozen chicken. I bought bags of frozen chicken, sometimes with rice. Hand feeding her. it's all about the love.
