In the 70s and 80s we used to fish for rock cod fish off SoCal to 800 feet using 4 lb. weights and at San Nicolas Island we'd use 3 lb. candy bar jigs. By the way, no motorized reels, that was for commercial fishermen which I did with 50 hooks and a 25 lb. weight and a winch.

Its a spiny dogfish here in the northeast we become inundated with them during codfishing in the winter. I knew trawler captains that use to target them they said that they were going to the author treachers fish and chips.

That little shark was a Spurdog. one of the species of small sharks bearing spines in the genus Squalus. I think it was a Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias) which would be the commonest species off the coast of Florida.
