Fishing from one of the many road bridges in the Florida Keys we catch multiple tropical species and a surprise encounter with a very large bycatch. Under very challenging conditions I land some stunning fish. Witness loads of wonderful sea creatures and explain what I am doing and why, the rigs I am using and share any lessons learned from this session

I spent fifteen months living in the Keys and fished from my boat most days. In that time I quickly learned that if using fish baits, dead or alive, you really have got to use a wire trace to avoid recurring bite offs thereby leaving hooks in fish. Which of course is just not good angling. Unless you get lucky, heavy nylon leaders will not land your fish much of the time due to the large numbers of very toothy predators. Unless you're fishing from close to the end of a bridge it's not a great idea to be fishing for anything from sharks or tarpon to grouper. hook a big fish, it can't be lifted from the water and it's impossible to land it unless it can be walked up to the end of the bridge where waterside access is possible. Tarpon and grouper fishing really does need a heavy nylon leader as a wire leader can be seen by the predator and bites get very hard to come by. Focus on fishing on where you know the tarpon and grouper are and it's possible to get close enough to unhook the fish and you should be able to avoid most bite offs. I enjoy your films John. but I think in this case your methods need refining in the interests of the fish.

Great video. Enjoyable and entertaining throughout. Again, the variety of fish you came across and even caught was impressive. You've certainly made the most of your time in Florida. Witnessing you catch the Green Moray Eel was seriously impressive. Those eels are ferocious predators in the sea and are said to have far more aggression that the commonly found Conga Eels located here within the UK. Thank you for sharing.

You and obviously the rest of the family really had a great time in FL, thanks for sharing some of it with us. Terrific underwater footage, however apart from the fish and lobsters I noticed that there was nowhere near the variety of marine life that you get around Cornwall. After catching all those different species of fish, your favorite dogfish will be a bit of a let down!

Thank you sharing, as always you put togther a great and very watchable video. One question, there appears to be an area behind that is wood/shrubs. Wasent it possible to fish from this to give a bit of a chance of landing the lumpy fish. The keys will be my destination soon so all info is so intresting to me, so many types of fish to catch, just brillaint.

An enjoyable set of videos showing an array of species that live there. One thing was worrying me though, there was a chance that some of the fish could have been poisonous - similar to our native Weever fish, especially seeing as how many were clad in spines! Well done and I hope that the rest of your family enjoyed their holiday as much as yourself.

Hi John,
Thanks for sharing your time in Florida with us. Must have been really exciting with all those beautiful species of fish.
Maybe sometime you could make a video giving tips on what tackle to take on holiday any extra baggage costs involved etc etc.
Thanks John,
Stevie in Fife.

You can catch spiny lobsters like that where I am in the cooler part of Australia (south east. They get harder to find as the season goes on though. The stocks out in deeper water seem endless though. Fishermen regularly catch 4-5kg ones.

Amazing video John, thanks for sharing. The nurse sharks you caught reminds me of my trip to the Cape Verdi islands on Male. I managed to land a 280 lb. Nurse shark from the cliffs on a mullet live bait, took me over 45 minutes to land.
