The entrance/bottom, as you already cut it off, need to make a funnel out of stronger screen and coner the two holes with screen. Also if you remake it totally don't cut the whole bottom off, just cut the circle on the bottom out. That attach the funnel to that. It would also be best to do the same with the top, that way the fish and crayfish can go in both sides. As to how to attach the rope to it get a stainless steel D'ring or two and attach them to the barrel at either end. I would also cut the barrel in half and get a couple of stainless steel flip locks to lock it together for easy opening. Basically like the commercial minnow traps you have. If you have a drill just drill some holes in it instead of shooting it. They do make barrel clamps and you should be able to get one at the same place that sells them. For bait use Ol' Roys gravy train dog food. You will catch everything that will fit in those holes in no time. Also with the way it releases the gravy it works best in low or no flow water but it will pull everything down stream to it. I had one of those commercial made minnow traps and in 5 mins I would have to take it out of the water because it would get filled up with minnows, baby chanel cats, baby bluegills, and mudbugs. I haven't found a bait that works better. Also the dog food floats so the crawdads can't eat it all all that fast.

i was a rodeo clown / bullfighter for 12 years. regular rodeo clowns like me DONT get in the barrel. we have a dedicated guy called a barrel man or the man in the can. his job is to entertain the crowd some what and off er us guys in the arena a place of safety we can go around to get away from a rank bull. we dont really ever dive in on top of the barrel man, we also use the barrel as a prop to play with the bulls to entertain the crowds now you know and you should cut the other end ff and make a giant cone for them to swim into. it would aid in sinking and fish retrieval

Hey another video with this trap but you need to rig it with a funnel entrance going inside the barrel like every other minnow trap has And use some cattle pellets or wheat pellets for your bait when targeting bait fish or minnows. The thing is bad to the bone dude forreal lol just needs like a spring door and some minor finishing touches

Put a door into the side so you can access the inside of the trap easier. And then on the top, put two more holes 90 degrees from where the current holes are. That way, no matter what side is down, you'll have a hole that is closer to the bottom. May also need to put funnels in them to keep minnows from getting back out.

You could take a 5 lb weight and tie it to the side of the barrel inline with one of the holes. That way it sinks faster and will hold the barrel in a position where one of the entrance holes is on the bottom; which will make it easier for the crawfish to get into the trap

the smaller holes its cause it is going faster, you didnt catch anything becuse the have no entry point. make an entry point on the top of the barrel, bend the plastic inward so they cant get out and you will catch much more

Maybe try a big box type structure with just 2 by 4s, 2 by 6s and metal brackets for support on the corners to make the whole thing like a cage and have the two holes still and a door on the other side so you can get them out easier

intrestingly 22 mag bullets are actually smaller than 22lr because 22mag bullets fit inside the case whereas 22lr uses a heeled bullet that is the same diameter as the case(but there is only a very slight difference)

So use the same screen and make a cone with a small hole in the end. Just like your store bought traps. A couple of small hinges and door hook and you could also make a trap door on the side to get your bait out
