A few things you need to know about fishing jerkbaits in the winter time. Choosing the right jerkbait, rod, and line are big factors in getting fish in the boat

Good infor but the nose down deal is a total myth. Jerkbaits are one of my favorite baits and living in the north I use them a lot, a 7' rod is ok in low 40-42 degree water because you don't want the bait too erratic just like you said but as it gets warmer you can't use that long of a rod to work the bait on slack line, yes, you can work it but you won't get as much action as would using a sharp downward motion and we do better up here with a horizontal suspend versus the nose down, it is why the Xcalibur XS4 is much better than the Xaclibur EEratic shad, almost the exact same bait but the EEratic shad suspends nose down and doesn't generate the strikes the horizontal suspending XS4 does.

I fish jerkbaits a lot and catch a lot of fish on them esp in jan and feb here in north Alabama. One thing that made me real mad about jerkbaits is that every once and awhile you'll lose a fish on a very long cast that hits the bait and come toward you with the slack in the line. I started with mono went to flouro and it helped. But this past year I switched to using 20-30lb spiderwire stealth braid which is the size of 6lb test. Instant hook ups on long casts no change in number of bites I get. Plus I can swing em in.

ikewithac It depends on the water color. In most stained lakes. Clown or something with a little contrast is good. In most cases, you are trying to match shad, so the shad colors are good to start with. If the water is clear, the chromes and translucent colors can be better. For overcast days I always try black and gold or table rock shad. Split rings anywhere from size #1 to 3 depending on the size of the bait.

Boy all these cold water videos look great. I'm currently fish in So Cal Pyramid lake. Water temp is 44. I can see lots of fish but they just don't seem to wanna bite. Any advice. I just started to try this cold water fishing. i'm new to jerk baits. Hope I can figure this puzzle out. None of my fishing buddies know how to catch these fish in deeper water. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I fish braid with a fluro leader. I just make sure my leader is longer then max depth of my jerkbait. The pond I fish is 7ft-8ft at its deepest, avg prob 4-5ft. I fish a yo-zuri suspending jerk in a perch like pattern. It'd highly reflective so puts off awesome flash, sits nose slightly down out of box, has great action, n suspends well.

i got the same rod Justin, you think i could throw a pointer 78 on this rod? the bait fish around my area (Illinois) are quite small early spring, like 2-3 thredfins, and down sizing from a pointer 100, too a 78 is sometimes the secret that time of year for me to catch not only bass but some nice slab crappies.

Important question! What rod and reel would you prefer when it comes to fishing with rattle traps and crank baits? What and reel for spinner baits, and rod and reel for top water lures? If you answer these questions I will be amazed! I really appreciate it Justin! You are the bomb!

Smithwicks are junk nowadays. The suspending rogues do not suspend at all. The last batch I got float like crazy. Next time I'm going to splurge on lucky craft and megabass.
