In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I've made it to Redding in northern California to meet up with Ben Wiechman on the Sacramento River to chase rainbow trout. I've never caught a freshwater trout in my life, and the smallest fish I've targeted on the trip so far turns out to be the most challenging yet. Watch to the end for a preview of episode 9! Huge

Nice video Robert. I am from the Pacific NW and have done my share of fishing light / ultralight set ups. Your guide definitely knew how to fish. hooking up on a nice slab every drift. I was a little disappointed he didn't help you fix your problem withe line tangles earlier though? Did you let him know you were having that specific problem right away? Lots of salmon / steelhead anglers in the northwest use a rig with Slinky's or pencil leads, swivel, leader attached to artificial lure or bait or both. Anglers will cast SLIGHTLY upstream, allowing the weight to sink near to the bottom by the time your drift starts. However, if you cast too far upstream, with a rig like this. especially with a lure/bait on the terminal end so much lighter than your weight. The weight will lead the terminal gear downstream and the terminal gear gets tangled around the main line or leader near your sinker. I saw a video the other day, where the pro guide/ lure rep suggested to limit the upstream angle to 15' past perpendicular. I would guess casting too far upstream as more likely cause of your line tangles here than unsecured sinker/terminal gear while moving. I can remember tangles that looked like that years ago when I was drift fishing corkies, yarn, and bait from the bank. Tight Lines.

I started fishing at the age of 7 years old and I had fish for different types of fish over the years grown up since then. I love trout fishing and crappie fishing more than anything. I will say this I had never did kayak fishing before seriously. Where I live we don't have the big Waters to use a kayak which is a shame. Anyway I enjoy watching your videos on YouTube keep up the great work. And hopefully one day before I get any older I will kayak fish.

Why do some fishermen pull trout out of the water for photo-shoots and hang on to them and ewww look at the color all the while the fish is drowning gasping for water. Either keep, kill it and eat it or let it go. Especially trout if this was a lingcod or catfish maybe but even then don't stare at it in your hands.

Robert, this has been my favorite video so far. I grew up fishing rainbow in Ontario Canada, such a fun fish to catch. Using the ultra light rod and real always makes you feel like your on a monster. Thanks so much for posting this video, it will always remind me of summers at the cottage.

I'm not usually that guy but I'd teach the dude with Robert a thing or two about trout fishing lol can't stand these guides they don't know what they are talking about, all fish they catch on their tactics is pure luck I have it down to a science

Bro, that bridge is part of a world record. The giant tower right next to it is the world's largest working sundial. and where you are is one of the most famous fly fishing resorts in the world, along with one of the biggest fly shops in the world.

Those are huge! Trout are tough to catch, you caught more in one day than I have caught in my entire life much larger than the ones I've caught too. I'm definitely putting that meat and potatoes trick on the menu for them next time.

If you are going for rainbow you should go to mayfield lake in Washington. I go at least 15 times a year and either limit out or everything is to small to keep
