This is filmed at 3AM local time and with a one-man crew, so we will only be quickly recapping the MSI scalping controversy that blew up overnight. We spent a few hours on the phone with people all over the industry and have some insights to share. We will not take all superchats on this one as Steve needs to get back to work on other stuff before bed, in theory, but much needs to be filmed.

Basically this guy somehow got recognized by MSI as a distributor affiliate and would get inventory as if he was a store. He then sold merchandise like a common individual would and took advantage of the shortage. The question is did this guy trick and bs his way to disguise himself as a legit distribution business, and MSI s vetting process is garbage, or did an MSI big wig cut a side deal with a friend or relative that also works there to make extra ? The fact that the business main contact # is the guys personal phone is hilarious and extremely sloppy on his part. I wonder how long this hustle has been going on? Months? Years? Multiple heads should roll.

I don't trust MSI after I got my MSI x370 gaming pro carbon for my Ryzen 1700X. It was trying to cook my RAM by running at 1.5v instead of 1.2v & my CPU at almost 4volts. This happened for several bios updates, and even though I went in to Bios and adjusted it after I found out why my PC was hard crashing all the time. And with every new bios update it would overvolt my RAM & CPU again. So to me it seemed like they rushed that Motherboard to market. And for the price I was pretty disappointed as it had less features than my almost a decade old Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 TUF motherboard. So I will never buy a MSI mobo again after that experience.

I honestly don't see it any different than price gouging (which is illegal in some places) during the pandemic, which has effected supply chains. You might be able to draw a link with GFX cards becoming a necessary commodity since so many people are now eComuting and eLearming and actually require a card (a very far stretch, but you could make the argument).
I'd toss it onto the radar of a low level politician or lawyer trying to make a name for themselves. They are like dogs with a bone with this kind of stuff and will run with it.

I don't believe MSI claiming it's an error. I also don't believe it's the doing of one person. Seeing how fast the statement went out, and how fast they localized the Source of the error, the PR statement seems like a thinly veiled way to shift the blame away from themselves.
By doing this, what's the worst that can happen? It's not like they got an credibility left to lose. MSI would only reimburse the overpriced parts they charged, and essentially lose no money. Clever trick, but scumbags nonetheless.

I don't understand the people who need these enough to pay scalping prices. Do they not realize that they are only contributing to the issue? We're talking about a luxury, not a necessity. At this point, I'm fine waiting. Hell that even gives me the opportunity to see what the competition has and, you know, make an informed decision lol.
Point being - If scalpers lose money by sitting on products because no one buys them, then scalpers won't scalp the products.

I don't get the outrage, it's like MSI or some subsidiary put a price on essential stuff like water and food ...
No! Someone put an overpriced tag on a luxury item (that's what a 3080 or 3090 is), if people buy that shit for this amount of money, they encourage this behaviour, but the seller ist not the one who controls this market.
The buyers control the market, if an item is overpriced, just don't fracking buy it and the price will drop, that easy.

This is why I like GN content, it actually is content, not just reactions, hot takes and other filler to pad out videos and get some ad revenue, but actual useful information. Keep up the good work Steve, and though I prefer the more scripted videos having this sort of thing to address time critical concerns and news is fine from time to time as needed :)

Guys; either you say capitalism is basically evil and markets fail at least as much as they work or you have to admit this is MSI being good free-market capitalists and nvidia should really be doing the same.
I mean the whole scalper discussion would really be solved instantly if nvidia would simply offer the cards at actual market value.

M.S.I.....Money Scalping Industry.
This will only get worse until people get serious about holding manufacturers accountable in not spending their money on their products.....Touring doubles in price and Ampere is turning out to be just a scam in price....and now 2080ti's are more than the 3090's MSRP?
If it looks and smells like BS.......

Didn't even know about this event. I woke up to see this video. I don't really pay that much attention to Reddit an other social media, thus I am really glad that I can trust GN not to make premature statements on such topics. It's like a filter between me and social media bs. Thank you for your sincerity, I hope I never have to loose trust in GN!
