Handheld AMD Gaming PC: AYA NEO Review & Benchmarks of a Switch Alternative

This handheld AMD gaming PC is the AYA NEO, and aims to compete with the GPD WIN3 and, to some extent, maybe the Nintendo Switch. It can do PC gaming on the go and we tested it. The AYA NEO is more interesting as a handheld PC than it is as a portable console or Switch alternative, although it could certainly be marketed as either. Our testing benchmarks the thermals, battery life (while gaming), charging time, framerate (FPS) of a few games, and the usability of the AYA NEO. It's a heavy, somewhat awkwardly constructed device, but that's the nature of a handheld PC. The question is whether it's good enough to justify. The AYA NEO's history is also extremely strange, as are some of its partnerships, and we'll look at that backstory in this content as well. The most critical is user experience, navigation, and usability, so the team took turns with the device to really develop some opinions on how it handles. Kniffel101: These devices are really, really nice!
With modern AMD APUs and high-capacity batteries it's just awesome to have these Switch-sized Windows machines.
And even if higher-end games can't run at maximum settings, it's perfect for Indie games and emulation!
Just the price of these, since no established hardware maker tackles them (except for Alienware, if that project still exists), is very tough.

What an odd product... It is really expensive for the hardware used and the main usecase is light gaming with controllers or running emulators. Detachable controllers and a detachable keyboard would make this thing so much better and give it more uses. Also the screen..... for a Windows machine 1280x800 is completely obsolete. Most smartphones have better resolutions. And the main usecase of those devices is not gaming. Nintendo may get away with lower resolution screens, but on a Windows machine 1080p or 1440p would be much better. Since the battery life is quite short anyway I'd have to plug it in for longer travels. It seems the only advantage compared to a laptop is the form factor here. And on short trips I can't imagine wifi being great at all times and playing Skyrim or Doom for 10 minutes while waiting for the bus to arrive at your stop is also not great...

Big feedback comment: Its like you don't understand who would find such a system enticing at all... Who wants to play games like Fortnite or Siege on such a system?
Should have tested AAA games back say 2018 and backwards on 720p and how they run. Maybe some retro games and how they run too...
Emulation if possible and it would have been nice to know how good it will be to use docked that is paired with a monitor and kb+m as a desktop to some basic office productivity, browsing and content consumption...
If your just interested in doing a review from a technical point meaning temps, internals etc then maybe label the video as such?

These handheld computers are really cool, but I think they would work much better with an ultra lightweight Linux installation (relying on Steam and Wine for games) than the notoriously bloated, performance-taxing Windows 10, but then ofc they'd have to design a comprehensive and powerful Linux UI to make this appeal to all potential customers.
Windows 10 already comes with a UI that everyone knows how to use, and it's hella impressive to run windows on a switch sized device, so, while it's not the best choice for performance, it's definitely the more safe choice...

Let's not kid ourselves that anyone who hacks into a game console or wants to install linux on it does that just for hobby aspect, aside of selected few who do that to any device with cpu in it. No need to be annoyed that manufacturer doesn't allow it, that's just common sense for type of device which business model built on selling software.
People hack things not for homebrew , but to just pirate games, nothing noble or pure about it. No need to sugarcoat.

AYA should first try making a Windows 10 tablet, making it possible to play with an Xbox controller. Than, focus on detachable joysticks based on what gaming smartphones accomplished without infringing any Nintendo (or Sony) patents. There are so many attachable smartphones joysticks, and many are Chinese anyway. Even more, attachable fans for cooling.

Think I'm still going to go for the Win Max and a mouse, after owning the original Win for years (still using it btw, on its 2nd battery) the one constant I found is that for anything other than indies I wanted a mouse and keyboard. I've had GPD (and also a few JXD) devices and the only one with decent controls was the GPD G5A.

3 on the market: this, GPD and the One GX. GN doing a head to head of all 3 would be interesting.
Funny how Aya takes a jab at GPD for have 50% more cores, as testing has shown the ability to process more threads is better.
There was once a time more real cores would have been better, but that was many years ago.

I just built a completely up to date pc with less money than this costs(minus the gpu, monitor and peripherals ofc). Probably not worth it imo.
Maybe there will be a better market for this in the future though as tech continues to stagnate.

would be interested to see how this handles playing wow, not so much for raiding or any high end stuff, would be cool for leveling alts if it could handle it, since there is a bunch of addons for console style gamepad play
