Ask GN 116: GN Case When? Fire Hazard Testing? Why Don't You Review More Things?

This was the last Ask GN filmed at our old location (film date was October 5). The topics cover the GN Case, such that it is, fire testing, limitations of reviews, and more. Steve: Arguably GN has done far more for the trajectory of the case market through reviews, tearing apart the garbage products, and putting such a strong focus on how the case affects the pieces inside. GN could make an excellent chart-topping case and it would still be just one case. But the market force from viewers who buy based on GN's objective analysis have moved the needle on the industry as a whole. So in a way, GN's influence exists in many cases today.

u can make a nice itx case, i had an idea wher i wanted to have one like Lian lis Q58 with the hotswap 2.5 ssd trayy but i want it where the CPuU cooler blows int the ITX GPU (6:inches or less) or could fit 3 slot gpus and pull it heat and the cpus (so fan on slim cpu cooler would blow up instead thrugh the cooler and into the GPU then out the back (AMD REFERENCE 6800XT in mind HERE ) blow fans out the case from the 6800Xts outs from the heasink at top and bottm of the coolers. with intake byt he CPU end of the case. idk my picutre in my mind worked in my R9 nano and 3600X ITX pc test but idk about new high end cards like 3 slot 3080s & 3090s ?

Real question here, not taking a jab at you or whatnot, but do you think you REALLY have what it takes for a case design? I'm very aware of what amount of work goes into designing a case, and there are already a few tried and true formula that works; so chances are you might accidentally be influenced by an existing gold standard case.
Secondly what target audience do you think can use a case of your design? Being a budget minded gamer I'd love a cheap (sub 70-80) case that offers excellent features, or do you think you want to go for an extreme overclocker's case?

I was considering swapping my Phanteks Enthoo Pro with 5 x Noctua NH-14 PMW chromax and HDD cages removed for something a bit more modern, smaller and maybe with better airflow. Than I looked at case prices and the features they offer. I will stick to my case for another 6 years untill rust gets it, or the new motherboard standard kicks in. Besides the looks and RGB I can't see any advantages. Maybe you could make a comparison of some older well revieved cases to the modern ones regarding airflow and features they offer.

The case discussion was interesting. Would the challenge be more appealing to GN if the case was designed, manufactured and distributed entirely from within the US? The project would be harder, but you'd come into contact with small businesses, and US business owners who are very interesting, and no doubt full of innovative ideas themselves. Is such a project even possible outside of the Chinese supply chain? If anyone could find a way then my money would be on GN.

On that last note, I believe a lot of you guys also listen to metal so I definitely hear what you're saying in that, so many times with bands I listen to I hear that (Whitechapel, Trivium, Fallujah all as somewhat recent examples I've seen it for). It definitely comes to my mind too on occasion but I usually won't say something because someone making what they love is a great thing in itself and that just means I'm not the target audience for that content.

Maybe this has been said already, but why not do something like derbauer with lian li first? That way you will have experience in that area and maybe find a way from that forward with your own case idea. And again sorry if this was already mentioned by you guys, because if it was i forgot XD
But i think a colab with a case company would be nice, if they listen to your feedback with the expertise you guys have at gamers nexus.

I suppose one other perspective on the case issue is that you're doing more of a service to the community in the long run by trying to get the industry to make more rational design decisions by highlighting their failings, than by bringing onto the market a perfect case that might not meet the needs of every member of the audience. You're obviously not going to be able to produce a range of cases big and small.

Regarding the case, the reason I watch GN is because there is a sense that the team really focuses on what interests them. I'm sure plenty of other stuff gets greater views than PSUs, fans and cases, but this is clearly what they team wants to focus on and it is evident in the quality of production and high quality of the work. I'd say if you're not 100% interested in doing a case, it doesn't make sense.

No matter the amount of disclaimers, It's always a really bad idea to start making and selling stuff similar to what you're reviewing. Even with full disclosure there will always be occasions where people will question the integrity. And the last thing we want is for manufacturers to not take GN's opinion into consideration due to trust issues (don't know if they actually do, but they should).
