Ultra Cheap 23 CPU Cooler Review: Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 Benchmarks

At time of posting, the Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 is a 21 (it keeps changing!) CPU tower cooler. This review benchmarks it for thermals and more vs. the best CPU coolers. Note that there's no included LGA1700 bracket right now. There will be in the future, but for now, they are selling them separately. The Thermalright Assassin Spirit keeps changing prices as we've worked on it. It seems to range between 21 and 31, but at either price point, it's a seriously competitive, low-frills offering. The Spirit doesn't try to do anything special -- it certainly doesn't look special -- but it does perform well for a cheap tower cooler. That's about all it does. The Spirit drops coloring, lighting, and more user-friendly mounting to reach a low price-point. In this benchmark, we'll be looking at some of the best air coolers for CPUs on the budget market. This cooler is most suitable for something similar to an Intel i5 or AMD R5 CPU, but can obviously cooler lower-end CPUs just fine. We'll also test it against an R7 type of heat load. The Vetroo V5 is the most obvious recent competition vs. the Spirit 120. S ndor: Despite their wacky marketing Thermalright makes excellent coolers especially if cooler height matters. I have a 47mm full copper cooler from them, great for same ITX cases. The availability can be scarce but they have a lot of products on Aliexpress and prominent in China maybe that explains the marketing.
Just keep in mind some their coolers installiton kit is very basic. My cooler came with only 4 screws that you have to screw i to the bare PCB (it's an AM4 specific cooler but the screws are too short for leaving the backplate on) it's not the most reassuring solution, the board bends somewhat. Still, it works so far, over 1.5 years so I guess it's OK.

Good to see Thermalright being reviewed. I've had a Macho since 2012 for my 3570k which I sold 1.5y ago, and I'm glad to report Thermalright was able to provide an AM4 adapter for pretty much free (only paid shipping from Germany) almost a decade after purchase. They also supplied some extra fan clips for free since mine were going bad. Top support right there and the cooler has now went through a (briefly) 2600x, 3800x, (briefly) a 5950x which barely hit 89C on Geekbench, and it's not full time on my 5900x doing great. The only real issue with the Macho is the complicated center screw, and maybe the fan damper stickers falling off. Other than that, even the 140mm fan is still top notch for a decade.

Amazon prices change in real time based on demand and other factors. I was looking at a 3d printer nearly every day while saving up some money. The price steadily increased by nearly 100. On purchase day it was the highest it had ever been and was more then I had saved. So I dumped my cookies, connected to my VPN, and went back to Amazon. The price had dropped all the way back to its original price. Log back on to my account and its 100 more. I bought the printer using a different amazon account and saved my 100 bucks and started watching the prices alot closer. I have only used Amazon 3 times since and only when no other options regardless of cost exist.

And that's how the industry is meant to operate, low margin high volume, as opposed to what NVIDIA and AMD are and desperate to keep doing i.e. lunar orbit high margins and as low a volume as they physically can. A petrifying stagnation and regression in price to performance . . . whereas this is a good product, for a good price that will move volume to compensate whilst providing that brand recognition as said, but also just people's affection so to speak.
Nowadays it's who you despise less, at least in the GPU market. Depressing and a shame really.

I had a Thermalright Macho HR-02 Rev.B: it served me VERY well for a long time: silent and cool on my 6600K 4.6 GHz.
Unfortunately it was very big, which meant that when I changed case, I had to rotate it (getting air from the GPU and shooting up) because the fan was pushed higher by RAM and therefore the cooler touched the glass of the case side panel with both the heat pipes and the fan. That said, I was very happy with it before, so that I installed a Macho cooler in many of the PCs I assembled for other people

Most people's impressions of Thermalright still stuck at years ago. Since they were bought by the other company, the quality got a lot worse. Both of my recently bought Thermalright coolers have extremely uneven coldplates. What is the point of the mirror finish when the coldplates is barely contacting the IHS? Their new fan models also have shitty bearings, they produce clicking noise when mounted horizontally.

Suggestion: Can you detail which sockets a cooler can mount to? Believe it or not, some people are still tinkering with Socket AM3 or LGA775 and might be seeking a replacement cooler that is compatible with their socket, I'm sure they'd like to know upfront if this works for them without having to wait until almost the 20min mark for the box shot that finally reveals this information.

10:15 : That's a bit of a bold claim! As Thermalright was very present in the western market 10 years ago to a point that it was with Zalman the main reference to most of the benchmark, mainly for its Macho cooler. It actually lost his popularity in the current era, which seem more to be in the process of retirement of the market than trying to gain the western market.

Great content !
May I suggest to include a few more indication on pricing ? What would be a good deal ? What would be a upper limit for said product ? etc
You are already doing part of it, but I think it would help a lot of people in different market situation. Would be very helpful with the upcoming launches in GPU/CPU and the subsequent shortage ...
Love your work !

Thermalright is one of the better companies to go with for 12th gen because they have a convex base plate. Really helps with the bending issue. We'll doesn't help but closes the gap created by the bending issue lol. Not sure about this unit since the heat pipes touch directly but ak120 has a normal contact plate and most of their other coolers above this.
