NVIDIA RTX 4070 Founders Edition GPU Review & Benchmarks

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 has a release date of April 13, 2023 and an MSRP of 600. We're reviewing the video card today, testing the RTX 4070 GPU with the NVIDIA Founders Edition model. One of the key comparisons currently -- maybe surprisingly -- is actually AMD's RX 6950 XT, which has plummeted in price over the last year or two. We're also benchmarking the RTX 4070 vs. the RTX 3070, RTX 2070, and GTX 1070, giving 4 generations of the 70-class. Of course, other test data includes the RTX 4090, 4080, and 4070 Ti vs. the RTX 4070, with comparisons to plenty of 30-series and 6000-series cards. Although the 7900 XT and XTX are in the charts, they are (like the 4080 and 4090) in a different price class. James: thank you the last generation of this family of GPU 3070 8GB, 3080 10GB for 3080 with the 3060 been 8GB or 12GB Now this next generation of games are starting to need GPU with 12GB card with with 8GB are having issue and have to turn setting down to get the game to run
So if next generation of gaming is moving towards needing 12GB could this foreshadow need more memory say around 16GB + for high end of output.
So if was me getting a GPU. the fact that it only got 12GB memory would worry me at that price 600 and above will this card last more than 2 or 3 years before you start to turn down a lot of output setting as I do this is what going to start happing with 3080 and kin and many other cards that have less memory

I think this is an okish card, due to inflation, 500 is around 570 so its more like a 30- 20 price increase increase at a price point where that doesnt really make a difference to anybody that could afford it. Its still borderline stagnation since its slightly slower than a 3080, but the realistic price of the 3080 when everything settled was over 800, lets be honest. It also does have an extremely strong feature set and im way more confident in 12gb at 1440p with RT on and 4K in general than i am with 10 for the future, bus size be damned.
The problem is if you dont care about RT, NVENC for live streaming, nvidia broadcast, power draw, reflex or having a good upscaler or frame generation, then the 6950XT for the same price just makes sense for even better performance in raster and 16gb of vram. More so, you can buy a 6800XT for around 500 right now and that will perform relatively the same in raster as this and have the 16gb of vram people feel more comfortable right now with. It will definitely have a worse feature set for sure, but i dont think for most people that worse feature set really matters and theres a lot of fear around not having enough vram right now even though im personally in the camp of 12gb is gonna be enough for 1440p RT for a while and 4K non RT for a while in any game that isnt broken with a memory leak and things like that. Under current economic conditions people a high end 1440p, entry level 4K card for 500 is a big deal, and while i think RDNA3 will continue to be a flop for technical issues and prices, RDNA2 is time test pretty reliable and selling at a reasonable price range when Ampere, Ada and RDNA3 arent. And honestly unless youre gaming at 4K or using RT or productivity, you really dont need more than anything RDNA2 can offer. I still dont think driver wise theyre up to where Nvidia is because they literally arent, but ive had 2 RDNA2 cards and we still have one of them and minus weird uncommon exceptions it runs great on everything. I personally use a 4070 Ti cause it does exactly what i want no more or less, but i have no issues using RDNA2. Im just weird and aesthetically minded enough to notice RT even mid intense gameplay and live stream and do some productivity stuff as a hobby. If it wasnt for that id prob have bought a 6800XT and called it a day.

Why was the 3070 Ti left out of this lineup? We have two of them (and EVGA and an FE) and they are faster than the 3070 I put in my step-daughter's PC. I already have a 4080 in my main PC. But I would like to see where the 3070 Ti stacks up. If it's not much of an improvement over the 3070 then I may just sell them while the prices for those are holding up. I may just keep the FE card (I never sell those) but the EVGA one may sell better because EVGA stopped making video cards. So, they may become a bit like collectibles. Especially the EVGA RTX 3090 Ti.
Funny how I never like the looks (or the noise) of nVidia's FE cards until the 2000 series. I didn't like that single squirrel cage fan. Too noisy and ugly. The 3000 and 4000 series are almost works of art compared to the 1000 series and before. EVGA cards have always appealed to me aesthetically and performance wise. Their FTW and ACX 3 cards were always both attractive and powerful. I already miss EVGA in the lineup. Sigh.

I was planning to get a 4070 Ti card cause that's just barely within the tip of my high limit right now. (Honestly, it's probably even a bit beyond my budget. I'm going to have to pay it off over a couple months.)
I plan to play Cyberpunk 2077 (and mod it to work in VR. Im not planning on 4k gaming, but hopefuly 1440p wherever possible), play Starfield and other upcoming releases when it drops, do Video editing and various other things. I really hope it'd going to be strong enough. My 2060 hasn't been cutting it for all the VR games and other current/upcoming titles I try to play.
I hope the 4070 TI will be the right choice. The 4090 is definitely beyond my budget, two fold. I hear nothing but had things about the 4080, so i'm keeping my distance. The 4070 Tiseems like the strongest thing under 1000, so I'm hoping to jump on that. This standard 4070 seems rather lackluster, though, so I'm kind of nervous going into this.

The thing when looking at the older cards in comparison, depending on where you live, you really should also calculate in the power draw and costs.
At 40 ct/kWh and 4 hours of gaming per day a 3080 or 6800XT with their 300W+ power draw compared to the 200W of a 4070 will cost you around 70 bucks per year more. Also I'm guessing similar to the 4080/90 it is also more efficient at partial load compared to Ampere and especially RDNA.
Also compared to the default 3080 2 GB more VRAM, which doesn't sound much, but is exactly what you need to keep up with the current gen consoles, where games can use around 12.5 GB max right now.

Last fall, some pre-built sites like iBUYPOWER & CyberPowerPC did back-to-school promos where you would be upgraded for free to the 3080 ti for the price of the base 3080 when choosing parts. Anyone who took advantage of that offer made off like bandits regardless of the higher power draw because comparing it to the 4070 effectively means you're paying for last-gen performance/current-gen power efficiency & no amount of RT/DLSS can hide that comparison.
I was more shocked that the base 3080 can trade blows with the 4070 after seeing Hardware Unboxed's tests & now seeing these results.

You're covering another lack luster, over priced, boring product from a manufacturer who has proven to gouge both consumers as well as partners. Why? Why not cover something more interesting? Anything. It could be the capabilities of your car stereo. It could be the controller in your laser etcher. It could be the laser etcher itself. It could be your hemorrhoid cream. Anything would be more interesting and useful than the 4070.
Meanwhile, you've made a numbers soup presentation on something as interesting as a Toyota Camry.

I am still on 2070 super which still works well just not very well in VR sim racing. I was hoping to upgrade this gen. But I think I am going to hold off a bit longer until 40 series gets discounted hopefully enough that they might become worth the price. I don't care about DLSS and FG. Otherwise AMD could be a potential option for me personally. But, can't jump to AMD until they figure out their issues with VR on 7000 series. Both NVIDIA and AMD have issues currently stopping me (like many others like me) upgrading currently.

6950 XT is a beast here. With 16gb and never really losing but matching the 4070 in heavy RT, and also winning by a large margin in some cases, it's the clear value king. Not sure why you would prefer the 12gb 4070... Although many will sell as much we all know. There is dlss but, no one is buying a GPU for upscaling. You buy a new GPU so that you do not have to upscale. Also noteworthy, if you play warzone, this is another game where 6950 XT wins by a lot.

Many players like few high end games many old games. So many times the dlss will not work and the games which it does work will be increasing its texture and quality over time. As a avg user, if anyone buys a gpu, he would be buying it for 4-6 years down the line. 2k is becoming standard for good quality and fps now. So if a 600 GPU comes with only meager 12gb vram, it will not be enough for future top games.

I'm glad to see the 1080ti on the list, it certainly makes it easier for me to see a comparison to what i'm currently using. I've been trying to chose a replacement for mine since it's slowly starting to have small frame drops in some more modern games. deciding between going for a late 30 series or just going to 40 has been a bit of a struggle since my 1080ti has lasted so long like a champion.

As much as I hate to say it, it looks like the 4070 will be the card for me (but I'm still waiting a couple months) . I'm coming from a GTX1080. A dual slot, (more) reasonable power requirements to power 4k at 60hz(my monitor limit) I don't need super high frame rates, but to hold 60hz refresh at 4k would be nice. I'll be focusing on productivity over gaming.

I quite literally just bought a 3090 last week, installed it into my PC 2 days ago. I can still technically return it. The difference in price is about 400 less for the 4070 and I can't tell if the 4070 is comperable to the 3090 or if I should stick with the 3090... I have a 1440p monitor, not 4k. Would you say that the 4070 would be better than the 3090?

Guys coming from a 8700k and a 1080 ti and i want to go to a 4090 and a cpu. What do u suggest? I want gaming and some productivity around adobe premiere and video editing. I like the 13900k but the power draw its insane to be honest electricity wise. And then the x3d are cool but the 7950x3d does cost 200 euro more than the i9. Thanks for the help!

Was lucky i scored a 3090 for just 680 in my country.. The seller originally sold me a 3080ti suprimx for that price and later upgraded me to a 3090 for free cause another customer wanted the rgb aesthetics. Especially with games that are requiring a lot of vram these days and the performance are not that far off to the 4070ti.
