Sponsor: Thermal Grizzly Aeronaut on Amazon https://geni.us/e8Oq & Hydronaut (Amazon) https://geni.us/hOQrBAb The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 GPUs launch next week, but reviews can go up today. This benchmark and review of the RTX 5090 Founders Edition video card evaluates the gaming performance vs. the RTX 4090, RX 7900 XTX, RTX 3090 Ti & 3090, RTX 2080 Ti, and more. AMD has an RX 9070 and 9070 XT coming up, which will likely aim to compete in some capacity with NVIDIA's Blackwell RTX 5070 and/or 5070 Ti. For launch though, NVIDIA will ship the RTX 5080 and 5090 on the same day. These benchmarks look at rasterized gaming performance, ray tracing, power consumption and efficiency, thermal testing, acoustics, and Schlieren imaging of the 5090 Founders Edition cooler. To me, the RTX 5090 is just a 4090-Super-Duper. They got the extra performance by giving it more power and a bigger price tag. No improvement in performance-per-dollar or performance-per-watt is just not impressive to me. The only impressive thing here is that they got this MEGALODON GPU into a 2-slot card without issues. The 5080 looks decent but if its going to be faster than the 4080-Super than the 16GB of VRAM might be a little bit low. The 5070-Ti is the card that makes sense to me this generation. It should offer 4080-Super Performance for $250 less and thats just a win. The 5070 12GB once again doesn't have enough VRAM so Ill probably recommend that people looking at a card near $500 - go check out AMD 9070/XT instead. So ya, 5090 for 1% club, 5070-Ti for most gaming Enthusiasts, and AMD for lower budget. Seems like a pretty open-and-shut case.

The 5090 is not a a new generation. Atleast for gaming right. A new generation means performance improvements at the same transistor count and the same power envelope. What this looks like is just last generation scalled a little. Shouldnt it be called the 4095 or something. Where it has more cores takes more power and cost more. There is no technical improvement, just scalling. And im confused but all this frame gen stuff is all possible on the older hardware. Its driver and software improvement if that is the right word. So you are paying for software that has been held back from older cards The smartphone model. If you want the latest software buy a new phone. Throw your old one away. Dont worry that its still just as capable

Heyyy Gamer Nexus mportant question!
I’m starting an intensive coding course in machine learning to build foundational AI skills. I currently have a Gigabyte 4090 but no PC yet. Should I stick with the 4090 and invest in a high-spec rig (e.g., 120 GB RAM), or should I aim for the 5090 at MSRP
The idea is to eventually build a second rig: the 5090 for AI generation/training and the 4090 for gaming. My concern is the 5090 Founders Edition price doubling if I wait.
Also, I heard they removed the heat sensor on the 5090did you cover that By the way, you totally give off Jack Black vibes (in a good way)!

They just upped the power draw and price by 30% like they did last gen, no advancement in tech. The only good part is that size is not ridiculous anymore but even that is only for the FE that's out of stock within one week.
I miss the days when they were a graphic card company, introducing graphic focused features like ray tracing, physic systems, etc. They are a AI machine provider company now.

I'm considering an upgrade to a 5000 series Card and i wonder if 5080 is overkill or not for 1440P But i also plan on Using a Very HIgh refreshrate monitor (500) for Competitive gaming (Ik a CPU is important Planning a 9800x3d) so a Purely GPU Scenario will 5080 Be enough or an Overkill for 1440P (i also love single players ofc)

Steve, understand this has lower appeal, but it would be cool if you guys started testing these cards on linux with LLMs which can be measured in tokens per second, as AI becomes more and more important for home users and as cards become more and more able to run useful operations locally.

This seems like a good, bonkers expensive, fairly power hungry improvement over the last generation. The marketing claims strike me as them wanting to position the card as actually worth upgrading to from last generation, and... I mean when has that ever been a good idea
reply

When i watch these videos and see the trends stay consistent I like to find mine or another gpu on the list full well knowing I'm not buying the 5090 and root it on to beat out it's competitors. Most fights don't look great for my 6950xt, but we dominate on Resident Evil!

You're doing a fantastic job! Could you help me with something unrelated: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). How should I go about transferring them to Binance

All games max settings pathtracing on native 4k 60fps solid stable is still only in a dream. All $2000 cards still failed miserably.
The current AI tech is still dumb af, it generates pixel & frames but also generates input latency & artifacts/ghosting.

I wish there was a way to switch to the iGPU when idle because clearly none of the GPU manufacturers optimise their desktop cards for a low idle power draw. There's a so much silicon that could just be switched off entirely for 90% of the time.

What I've learned from this: My 1080 ti is still just fine for my 1080p monitor. I'd like to upgrade, but a GPU upgrade alone costing more than my old computer that had almost all top of the line flagship parts seems absolutely silly.

The 5090 is a troll from nVidia.
Not offering a well priced successor for the 4090. Not even close.
Instead taking 50% more money for tiny 20% performance uplift and stopping 4090 and 4080 production only for max. profit.

reply

5090 is just a 4090tisuper cosplaying as a new generation card. If your only improvement over last gen is more fake frames that is not worth releasing especially when it is more expensive than last gen.
reply

Excellent and detailed review as always, thank you, Steve. The 5090 is a beast. Unfortunately it scales linearly with its price and power consumption. I'll stay with my undervolted, underclocked 4080

Is a video about using this card in professional applications coming I’m curious about the encoder decoders and stuff. missed the not sure well run it on a second viewing of the conclusion oops
reply

Overhyped, Overrated, Overpriced. The cost per pixel is not worth it.
Worst part is there, people with too much money actually buying this crap just so they can be part of the exclusivity.

Great video steve! Love your videos! You always bring the best stuff and love your presentation style! Especially the nvidia dlss4 marketing demystification part!! ; ).

10:08 It is very sarcastically hilarious that you mention 3 meters for people from civilized countries... XD
I wonder when the world could be unified to metric. Perhaps never ever

reply

Did I miss it or was there mention of the game benchmarks being DLAA or DLSS It's my understanding the 5090 has new frame gen that emulates 3 frames for every 1 actual frame
