To Protect Yourself, Never Give Your DNA Or Biometric Data DistroTube So many companies now are requesting people's biometric data. Things like fingerprints, iris scans, voice scans, DNA, etc. are not pieces of information that you should freely give to a company. These are immutable identifiers and could potentially be a security risk and privacy nightmare

All companies have your DNA, they can extract it from you at your dentist, when you go in for an operation, when you drink from a glass, or a bottle - practically anything. I've taken a DNA test because I wanted to find out where I'm actually from and I found out that I'm mostly Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian (I'm British born with recent roots in Ireland, Scotland, Norway and Sweden). I found a few relatives in other countries and it's nice to know that I have roots outside of the UK in my favourite countries (being the Nordic countries). I think you're putting too much thought into it. Also, when you sell a computer part, your DNA is all over that, or a game disc, or a controller, or when you touch food packaging in a supermarket, or when you cough, it's even in the water that you flush down the toilet whenever you go for number 1 or 2. My DNA is the least of my worries because I'm not a criminal and as far as I'm aware I live in a decent country that has decent human rights laws, what's worrying me is Windows and the direction it is going in with privacy, which is why I stopped using it in 2013 shortly after Windows 8 got released and slowly switched to Linux as my main operating system. The UK (specifically England) didn't keep any record of my Norwegian/Swedish great grandparents and my Irish great grandparents either. I didn't realise that I were part Scandinavian in the past few generations until I took the DNA test.

You had me until the the ancestry part. Which is a pretty silly reasoning to use. Some people NEED to know that information, especially if the government isn't willing to find out for them themselves. Racist regimes don't matter, because people can always leave or fight back against such things. Hell people will deal with racism of different levels regardless, so knowing their ancestry through corporate blood testing isn't going to make much of any difference. To me, that sort of thing is a must positive, like for example Black Americans. It would help them discover what their lineage really is. Just like it would for Native Americans and some White folks.

DT, any advice for someone who only recently became concerned about security/privacy and over the past 30 years has passwords scattered across the Internet on a vast number of sites/services, many of which are the same password, and many of which have been compromised at some point in various data leaks? I-m sure I-m not the only person in this situation and frankly it-s overwhelming thinking about how in the hell to fix it. The only thing I can think to do is start with the most sensitive stuff (banks, e-mail accounts, social media) and change those first, then work one by one through every other site I can think of-

At a certain point you have to realize that your personal biometrics are everywhere. Not using a fingerprint on your phone or refraining from dna tests isn-t going to change much. Every store has a camera, every video you upload has your voice and face, your entire bank history is logged and kept for your credit. It-s not that im willing to give my biometrics to everyone, but there-s a line between reasonable privacy and making my life much more difficult in turn for the little privacy I already do have.

this is a long shot but i've tried ask ubuntu and various other forums already with no result. I installed Ubuntu 21.04 on my production machine, noveau driver is working fine with my rtx3070. as soon as i install the recommended driver ( nvidia-driver-460) and blacklist noveau,my machine boots into a black screen. ctril+F keys does nothing. i tried various different driver versions, checked my safe boot bios settings, nothing works. if someone has a tip, please let me know :)

Check out a company called encrypgen that allows you to upload your raw dna datafile and enables you to get paid by researchers to access your anonimised data.
Blockchain tech makes sure you are in control of that, not the company encrypgen.
You still have to trust their partners (or an alternative gene-sequencing company) that handle your bio-material to not use /store it.
Still, seems like a decent alternative until we get cheap diy home test kits. :)

How about making a video about what to do for people that want to make their life more private and safe? I mean most of us already gave out a tons of personal information by years of using proprietary software, what should these people do? I mean you can get away from being spied but what about the information that you already gave? Does it mean you are vulnerable forever? How to -clean up- the mess you already did and start a clean privacy-respecting life?

Clear back around 2008 or so, I was in jail in Santa Rosa County, Florida. They took eye scans of ALL of the people in jail at that time. They didn't ask permission. Now, mind you, in jail, you haven't been convicted of anything. You're being held until you are either released on bond, or until your case goes before the court. I feel pretty certain that our rights were violated.

You can-t win this, any pasive camera and software can be used to colect how you look how you sound like how you walk, they have your dna and fingerprints long time ago... sorry but it is not posible to protect you biometrics... at this point only whats in your head is private for a litle time till no suficient technology exists...

Privacy is not a thing anymore. You are surrounded by proprietary software, its just a matter of time when your data will be collected and stored. Someway or another. What our society needs is either ban of any proprietary software or creating a systems when everything will be 100% public but protected.
