ok ok ok, hear me out,
how about a mini super computer based on Raspberry Pi4?
so a cluster of say 4, 6 or 8, as it would probably be a little ott to go 12 or 16,
but I wander as a cluster of 4 would give 16 GB or 32 GB of Ram, (much more usable than 4 or 8)
and am I right in thinking it would be like having a 4 core CPU?
so that might improve the experience and the usability of a Pi desktop replacement,
If it does scale like that and it does work then every time you want to -upgrade- Ram or CPU power you just add to the cluster,
so you could go to a 32 (core) CPU computer with a potential capacity of 256 GB of ram depending on models chosen
that would be interesting to see and understand better

Just got a decent 15.5- 4K for under $230. off Ebay. Picked up a cheap Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. But now I'm waiting for the RaspPi 5, 6, 7, 8? Rather surprising that the portable -pocket CPU- and -separate component portable- idea hasn't taken off faster and gone much higher. We all still rely on clamshell laptops for portable, which are inferior IMHO to separate-component computers. Laptops are a much more cramped experience, and by their all-in-one nature have built-in high costs.

I've noticed that Manjaro on the RPI, no matter which DE you use it's painfully slow, even Ubuntu. -However- , using Ubuntu Mate is a more pleasant experience. Yes, it is slow, but man, not that slower than Manjaro. Unfortunately, I've noticed some errors, for instance Blueman. Sometimes (not always) just doesn't start at boot but hey, it works.

For those who really wonder if they can replace their laptops for this small machine the quick answer is no.
I used it for a while and it's so underpowered at this point it's better to do everything on your smartphone.
And if you really need a computer with enough power to work then you didn't need this machine anyway

You sure it's the CPU and not I/O on the SD card that slows things down? Updating your distro taxes your storage medium more than your CPU. The new Pi's Arm CPU is surprisingly fast for its price, I honestly wouldn't be shocked if someone used a Pi as their remote work PC during the lockdown.

I run my Pi 3 and it runs a browser no problem and I use office on it as well but I do use an SSD drive that made a big difference and if you use your Pi 4 with an SSD you would find it much faster plus overclock with a good heatsink and fan try it you will find it very fast

pi 4 isn't as slow when you're using usb 3 interface. i'm using hdd and it's fairly decent, even compiling some source codes. while there is nvme usb3 converter, it's a wasted potential personally due to speed limitation of the usb 3.0

The raspberry Pi is in my opinion intended for IOT applications. Maybe for what you say retro games, thinclient but that's about it. Have you ever tried Volumio with your pi? Works well with the PI -

pi4 needs a heatsink and fan. 45C peak load temperatures with a 52pi heatsink and noctua fan.
get a usb3 flash disk or ssd.
you just spent $200 for a low end computer that sips power. good job

What sd card are you using, that can make a big difference. One minute for web browser start is way more than what I get. Edit just finished the Video and saw the 15 second start time that look normal.
