De-Googling is not the only reason for rooting a phone, nor is doing it to be a geek, though I agree those are both among the many reasons ppl do it.
Other motives include:
-- wanting to be able to roll back updates that break an app (most often when an app creator drops support for your version of android)
-- being able to back up all your apps in order to transfer them to a new device without the time and data cost of downloading again
-- wanting to backup app days offline rather than in the cloud
-- wanting to remove vendor bloatware to free up space on limited storage
-- wanting to remove other intrusive software (like I personally trust Facebook even less than Google, other people might have their own specific area of refusal)
All of the above are included in the basic premise that is it is my phone then I should get to say what is on it not the vendor nor the manufacturer not the network. That overlaps with the idea of de-Googling but is not identical.
I enjoyed this video, apart from the first fifteen seconds.

-Rob Braxman If you're still viewing comments to your videos, I notice you mention Blackberrys before 2013 are -safe. - I want to make sure I'm understanding you. Does this mean before 2013, Blackberry didn't use spyware hardware? I just want an emergency phone in case I break down in my car. I've seen your vid on Librem phone, but what I've read about them and PinePhone convinces me these alternatives aren't ready for prime time yet. Thanks for your great vids & any answer to my question!

Nothing is Black and White! The whole point of rooting is getting TOTAL access to your phone. Once this is accomplished, the rest is up to the user since there are many ways, some easy some very difficult, to get around all the -obstacles- you are describing here. Are any of us going to bit Google? Clearly NO, however, a rooted phone is definitely capable of evading most spying with the right settings, tools and knowledge.

But! In rooted phone you can Limit Google crap! Android 10 is totalitarian control! By the way phone can be prepaid with different name and address. Gmail - made up name. When provider asks for ime - don't tell. Mane reason is that You can temporary Turn Off this google crap. By the way use your phone as hot spot and maps on tablet!

I wish I could make my old analog Motorola bag phone work on today's digital systems. 3 watts and no identification devices, it would be only phone I would need. I would get used to no internet and surfing, like in the old days.
