Excellent coverage on the Onyx Boox Nova 2 and its use beyond using it as a book reader! For a few weeks I have been using a similar e-ink smartphone called the HiSense A5 Pro. (I chose not to buy their color e-ink version since it is extremely reflective which is a contradiction for e-ink, but does exist in their color model) The Pro version comes with Android 10 without any Google Services. From what I have ascertained, the Onyx Books Nova 2 comes with Android 9 but I don't know if it can already be updated to 10. Can you suggest any Android app that doesn't require Google Services but can sync with Google Contacts database online? That is the only type of an app that I haven't found. I am certainly able to use the website contacts. Google. com which works but does not sync with the contacts on the phone. I have found several email apps that work without Google Services and connect perfectly to Gmail and show the contacts, but don't sync with the contacts on the phone to work with the dialer. I am looking for a Contacts app which does not require Google services, but can sync with Google Contacts online so I don't continue to have to enter each new contact twice. Thank you again for your wonderful coverage Rob.

Careful brother, you keep this stuff up, and you're gonna make me finally go out and buy one of these smart fones. This is reason Number #1 why I never bothered to get one, being in the IT biz, I already knew these little black boxes were nothing but secret Gov't tracking devices. with a phone built in it, absolutely pisses me off to no ends to think I would be constantly monitored by those paranoid criminal A-holes in DC. tiz why I avoid Winblows as well. I run a on-the-fly program from CD called -Tails- when on this here snooping ass internet and I have an ol Nexus 7(2012) tablet with a linux OS called Kali on it. You're a genius guy, I spent a good half a year of my life trying to de-goverment one of these androids, but it always was, -1 step forward, then next day, 2 steps backwards- because of their constant so-called -Security patches & updates-
You da man couz. SUBBED!

Rob, thank you for your great tech security stuff in all your videos. And I do enjoy your jazz performances as well. What a well-rounded man you are!
Now an important question for you. I'm very interested in getting such ebook reader as well to minimise the impact of blue light and eye strains. But the problem is this and many other ebook brands are made and designed in China. Do we face the potential data security danger that the manufacturers are able to capture our google account passwords and other info etc. if we use it to buy ebooks and sending emails plus web surfing (using the same systems account as in our mobile phone/laptop? Thanks for you advise ahead!

Super concerned about a message I saw in my logs on my xfinity WiFi router warning me that device was trying to connect to a malicious site and that the IP was blocked. I use my device to read technical and security blogs. I think this thing has something concerning on it. Is there a way to secure my device? Btw I only have 1 android device. This onyx Boox device. Thanks for your insights. I use DuckDuckGo to access the sites I trust and know.

Thank you for this Rob! Do you feel keeping a journal on this device (hand written notes and typed) could be really private (I first wrote secure instead of private? I saw the things you checked for security - but is there anything that could be lurking to send data or whatnot when I'm not aware it is connecting somehow?

Thanks, gives me some info for my Boox Poke 2 Color. I bought it for similar reasons, technical books with color images. The 6 inch display is not a good choice for PDF, but mobi and epub are good. Will be nice when the next generation of color eink come out, and hopefully cheaper and larger.

I bought the Nova 2 recently as well. The only thing I don't like about it is the memory isn't expandable. If you want another degoogle option you can pickup the Pocketbook ereaders which run a version of linux. I'm looking forward to the 8- color ereaders hitting the market.

I have a Nova Pro, I like that it does not run google stuff by default. I hope you pull this off, as I'd like to do the same if I can with mine. And I look forward to their colour E-ink model some time next year.
