Some time last year, (2020) I head my daughter talking to my grandson over my google-mini. I called her laughing at the time. She'd been the one to set this up for my wife when she bought it for her, and had used her own information. So while playing with my grandson she used the broadcast feature to send what she was saying over her google speaker and I was hearing it. What I found interesting was that my daughter lives roughly 15 miles away, so the google-mini was transmitting this over the internet.

Am just wondering how pervasive all of this BigTech-GOV surveillance is in the third world?
Say Cameroon, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya. Pres. Museveni in Uganda is aware of and pissed off by FB and google's intrusions but seems to be unsure how to expell them from the country.
Most of my Africa contacts use Chinese Techno phones [another can of worms? ]. They use VPNs, but only to avoid paying certain social media taxes to local carriers.

The mac address is part of the security. I set my router to only allow known mac addresses. So if the mac address is being transmitted as a form of identification, then where has this added security gone? This reminds me of us being told that your SSN will never be used to identify you. Yet now this is exactly what it is used for.

Bottom line, our government has allowed and permitted these companies to do this to us, for the government use. People we voted into offices. I-ve worked in IT since 1969. With telco and companies with gov contracts. Well known for years. Thanks for the updated info Rob. I-ll be shopping for one of your phones.

Rob! AKA Dr. Zulu! Please research and investigate the possibility of our devices being used by big tech to do radio tomography that can image people through solid material/ walls of our homes to spy on us in real time then make an episode based on your findings of the topic.

Now I need to go around and change all my mac addresses. It can be done, i actually had 2 nics with matching macs on a network, what a pita. Just glad I have always spent time obfuscating my searches with red herrings, and warned my kids. Time for a refresher for them tho.

May not apply to you personally but someone who has an awesome invention or other great idea is now subject to being ripped off before they can even attempt to patent their idea and it's been this way for at least 30 years now! They are protecting their monopolies!

These botnets clearly seem to be breaching GDPR laws. That may be a valid vector or a way to sue those that utilise such data collection technologies. The eu has enough political leverage to act on it. It has to be dealt with!

google maps is already such an app. it provides live traffic information on congestion and suggests alternate faster routes. it uses live data received from all motorists phones with location enabled, willing or not.
