How to replace a drive in FreeNAS 11 - Chris Titus Tech This video goes over how to replace a drive in FreeNAS 11 with a new one. I show you how to take a drive offline and install the new. This is all done in the new FreeNAS 11 interface without using the Legacy one

I tried to do this exact thing today. But for some odd reason Freenas could not boot and exited. It seemed to somewhere halfway into the booting sequence get confused with the new drive. Being short of time I replaced the original drive (the one popping Smart errors) and it booted again. Seems odd that replacing a disk of a raid mirror should mess up booting, and I-ll try again in a few days when I hopefully have more time.
But if someone has an insight...?

Short, sweet, to the point. Exactly what I needed. Also, if you have a server that supports hotswap, you can use dd to identify the failed disk. dd if=/dev/failed-disk of=/dev/null then go look for the blinking access LED (/dev/da1 isn't always slot 1!) . Offline the disk once identified, then swap the disk then replace it according to the howto. Much easier than expected.

FreeNAS noob question, in old RAID you use to have to use -matching- drives of same size. Can you -mix & match- different size drives in FreeNAS for this process? My NAS is fully populated but would like to swap one of the 1TB with a 4TB to gain some extra space. Is that an functional option? Thanks for the video!!

Hi There,
Im planning on using free nas for the future. For argument sake, What if 4 drives were configured in raid 5 and 1 of the 4 drives fail. Can you just hot swap the drive? Would it rebuild the array? Could there be any data loss?
Kind regards,

Awesome video! But you forget to mention how to properly detect the bad drive physically... do you recommend to write on the drive sda1, etc ? I'm on my way of building a 8 x8tb nas so when a crash occur, I must know so real the faulty drive. Thx again !

Hi, I-m new to freenas so please be patient! When you powered the machine off I am presuming you disconnected the faulty drive and fitted the new one? My drives are all usb, can I do this powered up or is it always best to power down to swap drives.?

Really helpful, I already had some basic knowledge but had never seen the process done. Now I know what to expect step by step. I was especially wondering how the resilvering would initiate (automatically it is). Good tempo, great video.
