Wayland vs Xorg - Learn which one to choose - Chris Titus Tech This video goes over what Wayland and Xorg do. It pits Wayland vs Xorg but each has their place. I also break down what the differences are between them and my personal experiences with each. Change Wayland to Xorg on Fedora 29 with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAGsVDN4BvY

Thank you, I learned just what I needed I didn't under stand much, 1 year ago when I first started learning Linux -GNU I knew I was't ready for X11. If, I started playing around with those files, trying to get my 15 year apple keybrd mapped out just right, I would end up messing up my system...faster.
After peddling up hill about 6 months I reached a point where all the acronyms are becoming familiar. I bought a System76 desktop, again the hill got steeper for a bit.(side tracked off Manjao, Ubuntu seemed very unappealing, POP OS feels a bit like cheating, I still haven't learned the commands nearly as well as I hoped...
Anyway thanks for all the vids, today it is funny to look back on those first days, it feels good to love computers again. I was close to canceling my IPS (internet service provider) and throwing those old aluminum IMACs off tall cliff :):)

Three years later still no decent RDP, even taking a screenshot needs work-arounds. It seems Wayland was not really market driven by customer needs but focused more on architecture, hence take-up is unsurprisingly low as it does not meet consumer requirements. We keep hearing about it being hard to keylog in Wayland, so can anyone name the plague of key-logging that took place in XOrg? This sounds like an -issue- the devs focused on because they were not focusing on what their users needed. The Reddit for Wayland has about 3-4 people!! active on it.
As far as users are concerned Wayland is abandonware. though ironically its development on XOrg has stopped. The entire Wayland project probably needs a cash injection with a new focused business case for the future.

Almost every Linux installation uses X11 because X11 and X Windows system are the same thing. The local display is treated exactly the same as a remote display, it is just faster. X11 was designed like that and works over networks because early UNIX systems were multi-user. xf86 and xorg are add-ons for X11 for specific hardware and systems.
Microsoft RDP is far better for remote display than X11. As it should be. X11 was written when most people reading this were not even born.

Old is gold. The security feature implemented in Wayland, that is not to allow applications to -see- the whole screen, has become a deal-breaker for me. Most of the time for designing, I need to pick colours from the screen, but unfortunately, Wayland doesn't allow that. Hope that the team behind Wayland implement a function to ask permission from the user to allow an application to -see- the screen.

If things have changed, can you do an updated video on this topic? Maybe get into whether it can be and how to use one over the other in different distros. Does it work with any window manager/Desktop env? In what scenarios does wayland fail? No nvidia here.

I use i3 X11 when I have to play games or learn korean and japanese because wayland is not quite there for graphical video and input support. But I def use sway (i3 wayland) for programming, it's so much faster and taking less resources.

The one thing that xorg doesn't do is different scaling on different monitors. Given a lot of people use laptops with very small screens connected to large external monitors this normally makes one of the monitors practically unusable

I have to switch between the two everyday.
On Xorg I can share my full screen, but not on Wayland. However, I can use track pad gestures on Wayland and not on Xorg. That's messed up haha
I'm using fedora 33

Wayland is great except that it doesn't work. Two years after this video, wayland can only last a few minutes without locking up and forcing a reboot of any of my computers. I can't believe they ship that crap.
