Since i had a windows laptop hacked i am on Linux plus paranoid about hackers. it all started when i bought a very cheap second hand laptop on Craigslist, a very old dell without the external disc so i could not re-boot the system. It was a total scam ran by a street gang. They stole big from me.It's a horror story. i still don't know how but one day i noticed my cursor moving on its own but first sometimes i could not access the desktop bottom menu bar.

I think this is whats goin round...I have those lost and found files and all kinds of no access messages when i try to do shreds and dd's...I tried clam that wont update, says 0 definitions installed and when i try it says OK You updated GJ! and still no definitions. is there a manual update method for definitions? How do i make it scan stuff i cant access? can i just do super reformat and reclaim entire drive?

You want to see your linux server get infected? Go ahead put public IP address in your server, change root password to -1234567890-, wait say 5 minutes, and then look at processes, you will see new apps that you never heard of suddenly pop up. Congrats, your server is now SSH brute-forced. 5 to 10 minutes tops.

I have a weird issue, no matter what antivirus software I install I can't seem to update the virus definitions. I was using Linux Mint 19.2 and now I have upgraded it to Mint 19.3. Even offline definitions are not updating.

the issue with clamav is that it takes 3 days to a week to finish scanning, with linux popularity and especially steamOS for steamdeck, a better solution for antivirus might become usefull even for the average user.

So, essentially what you're saying is as long as you know what you're downloading you won't get hit? Understood! But what if someone emails you that has malware attached to it, would you spread that to another PC?

Tbh I use Dr Web for my linux PCs and Android devices and it's pretty great, just like a Windows AV! ClamAV lacks performant onaccess shield and heuristic detection unfortunately

As is said by others I think that it is important to run AV on Linux if anything to be courteous of those on your network that may be running other operating systems.
