Gordon, according to people who know more about it than I do (computer scientists) X86 is not an efficient architecture any more and some other architectures would be able to push the performance further with the same hardware. Eventually we might dump X86. The problem, obviously, is the legacy software. I see two options if a new architecture would be introduced, either we take a performance hit at first for that legacy software or we might temporarily get dual-socket motherboards with an integrated X86 CPU and one CPU of a new architecture. Of course another question is how long we can keep making nodes smaller. It is possible to push it further with other elements than silicon but some of those are rahter sparse at the moment and mostly can be found in 'conflict' countries. I predict that the USA and Europe start a new war in one of those countries to plunder the minerals. I hope that I am wrong.
On a less serious note: homemade pizza is the best pizza. :p

I watched this as you were streaming it from my other profile but I don't have access to it right now so here I write.
Microsoft didn't take risks - yet again - with this launch. Pretty conservative choice for hardware - no Ryzen, no crazy memory, no APUs, no ARM, no LTE, no type-C, no new design, no new crazy battery stunts (although, if anyone could bring new battery technology to this market it can only be MSFT and a handfull of other giants, no excitement in any way. Not typical for the Surface series but I guess the new update to Win10 is kinda in the focus now. It still doesn't make up for the lack of excitement this time around. I'm sticking to my SB1 - still waiting for ANY of the above to show up before I upgrade. Specs ain't enough to spend that kinda cash, sry.

Except Edge sucks ass on slow internet. I honestly don't think Microsoft has tested it on subpar internet. Half the time it's just sitting there waiting for a page to load. According to Edge everything is loaded but ti; 's just a blank page and then bam randomly everything will show up at once. Happens on clean installs and doesn't happen on faster internet. I really think MS hasn't properly tested it in various conditions

One of things I heard Microsoft say at the presentation was they wanted to -keep the base small to fade into the background-. I truly believe if you asked most people they could care less if the base was a bit bigger to cram a bit more into it like 8th gen. its tiny as it is anyways. I dont think most people also care about things fading to the background when they could get some more power out of it if it didn't.

as far as a new arch (or micro arch -gordon-) then ocean cove is supposed to be the next one. i think its supposed to be coming around 2021 or 2022. who knows whether it will be new or just an improvement on core. as ram gets faster we can feed more instructions so i would think it would have more execution units and maybe a bit more out or order. but just a bit cause that stuff is hard to improve

-Illegal allocation trying to install SpeedCrunch. er, I mean, the Windows CalculatorTM is your best option to add, multiply, and even divide numbers, would you like to give Windows CalculatorTM permission to delete every stored copy of defective, inefficient and/or/and unauthorized software that may interfere with you enjoying the full Windows CalculatorTM experience? -

But AMD was bundling the the games with their Vega cards to discourage them from being bought by crypto miners. So it's not fair to compare it to what Microsoft is doing with the new Surface Pro 6.

Nice to see Mark and Gordon on a podcast together again, reminds me of the late lamented PC World podcast. I'd love to see Melissa guest sometime in the future as well (hint, hint.

windows 10 is the most obnoxious, intrusive and borderline creepy OS ever. no amount of -free- (it's hardly free when you get harrassed at every turn) updates will change that.
