when apple moved from PPC to intel it was not till the second or 3rd gen hardware that it was fully a better experience but also at the time software moved slower with updates and versions and they did not have a X86 software library to lean on like they do with there ARM IOS apps/devs.
PR is in full force to push confidence to it's market, the clams seem a bit -- phony. we want to see comparisons with laptops of the same price!
But for the market they are after with the 13- laptops its perfect for internet and Netflix, media consumption/ social media/ light work/ home work.
The thunder bot stuff was talked about in a level1tech video, thunderbolt has a lot of security problems which apple 'fixed' by disabling/braking a lot of stuff so it's going to bumpy for a bit.
I was disappointed by the lack of a 'big' cpu but at the same time i think the first few gens of hardware are going to be the beta testers before we see a high end CPU/GPU parts, relay cant wait to see what they will do about high end GPU's (will it be AMD or an apple custom GPU? or are they just going to use lots of custom silicon to accelerate tasks.
relay though it's going to take time for it to be stable in software/drivers/hardware so just give it a year.
dont forget apple has not told you what CPU is in the box for years, at most they say i5/i7 or 4 core. they have been clear your getting a mac not an 'intel' for years so i have to wonder if a lot of people just wont notice when they buy there next mac.
PS apple dose not care about legacy software and devs love it, you have to re buy the software and thats $$$ for devs. if you want legacy you keep an old mac (im not a fan but it's where apple has gone.
im a long time mac user & windows user, still tad bitter that apple moved away from content creation towards content consumption.

Anandtech does a deep dive on the A14 and is VERY bullish on the M1. Here's their conclusion:
-Apple claims the M1 to be the fastest CPU in the world. Given our data on the A14, beating all of Intel-s designs, and just falling short of AMD-s newest Zen3 chips - a higher clocked Firestorm above 3GHz, the 50% larger L2 cache, and an unleashed TDP, we can certainly believe Apple and the M1 to be able to achieve that claim. -
This moment has been brewing for years now, and the new Apple Silicon is both shocking, but also very much expected. In the coming weeks we-ll be trying to get our hands on the new hardware and verify Apple-s claims. -
Intel has stagnated itself out of the market, and has lost a major customer today. AMD has shown lots of progress lately, however it-ll be incredibly hard to catch up to Apple-s power efficiency. If Apple-s performance trajectory continues at this pace, the x86 performance crown might never be regained. -

The CPU is going to be faster than the vast majority of the laptop CPUs.
The most concrete statement they made was they were 3x faster than the prior Mac mini quad core. Because there is only one machine that can refer to. That is a 8100B and gets a 897 single core and 3203 on multi core in Geekbench.
Cinebench will be interesting. And the Rosetta 2 results will be interesting. I think the Rosetta 2 results are going to be way better than emulation is under windows on arm. Because they're taking a different approach and doing precompilation upon installation.
The fact that it's not doing on the fly interpretation is going to be at least an order of magnitude faster than it would be on windows using dynamic interpretation.
The GPU I'm expecting it to be roughly twice as powerful as an Xbox one S, not super impressive but fine for a laptop. As long as it's not a gaming laptop.

Im enjoying the Xbox Series X quite a bit, but I still enjoy my EVGA 2070 SUPER XC HYBRID too. Id love to get my hands on the 3080 but I feel content until things calm down for NVIDIA. I love the play anywhere titles and being able to move over to PC or Console with everything moving with me. I just wish every game on the xbox platform was like that. Maybe in time.
Im using NVMe in my PC and the load times compared to XSX is very similar. The XSX loads up really fast when you turn it on. Usually its already up and going before I switch my gaming monitor over to the XSX. Next gen consoles are impressive.

We should step away from this whole A vs. B vc. C. give everyone a place in the sun. Xbox user, PS5 users, PC user. we all want to play the best games, at the best price with the best experience. of the game. We have ONE pair of eyes and ONE pair of hands (those that are fortunate. You can only use one of the systems. at a time. We should celebrate the choice there is and that choice creates competition. not which is best. but who gets the most attraction. Exclusivity. locks out thousands in $ in revenue. and games that go exclusive are the losers.

This allows them to leverage their install base of iOS apps on macOS. They all but said that in the announcement.
Multiple people have said they can edit video faster on there iPad than there laptop. That's coming to a Mac OS laptop. And coming with all the benefits of a desktop.
I think all the iOS users who are used to using apps from their iPad or their iPhone are going to be way more comfortable on this than they are on a Windows PC.
This is a way to get Normies to buy Macs instead of PCs.

According to the recent M1 Geekbench scores, they-re damn fast. faster than most intel and amd silicon. Notwithstanding Apple-s nebulous marketing speak in its presentations, x86 is in trouble. The $999 fanless MacBook Air seemingly dominates the $2, 400 16 inch MacBook Pro in performance. Think about that.
Let-s wait on more benchmarks. But let-s not forget, Apple Silicon 3 nm is coming. Apple silicon is only going to get better as they scale it up.

PC world has always been full of crap! And Gordon is a complete moron! I saw his little apple is full of crap piece that he wrote- No PC World, you-re the ones that are full of crap! Don-t be salty because Apple-s -lowest- end MacBooks are superior in every single way, than your garbage makeshift PCs. Your whole operation should just go under for the crap reporting you guys do! Every single one of you are morons! #Failure #Fail #GarbageReporting

I just FF through the apple stuff because I don't care. macbook air is faster than 93% of laptops from 1994. I don't listen to Gardner, they suck as analysts, I think they can be paid off. Also, apple math.
I keep going back and forth wanting an Xbox Series X or just gaming on a PC. The $35/mo. for the Xbox with a nice amount of extras a sound nice.
I'd take the macbook and sell it without even unwrapping it.

Hahahaha! I need to see how the M1-based Macbook Air is faster in Doom Eternal and other titles (or in scientific calculations with CUDA) than may 1+ year old midrange laptop with I7 9750 + RTX 2060. I still wish to afford a Ryzen-based laptop with Zen3. Also, a few months after buying this one, the Ryzen 4800H + RTX 2060 MaxQ models appeared; talk about buyer's remorse.
