RIP HEDT: Will It Rise Again?

Gordon chats with Wendell from Level1Techs about high-end desktop systems. Is it dead? Who really needs it? Is Intel competing? What's the definition of HEDT? kungfujesus06: I disagree with the sentiment that PCI Express is solved . While in theory having bridge / switch chips on a board could solve this (at a latency cost), I've yet to see any of the prosumer brands actually do this. They all are much happier to only wire you up the lanes that are directly on the CPU and call it a day. It's only in niche workstation class boards might you ever see something like this and even then, those in the workstation market would rather have a monstrous number of PCI Express lanes hardwired to the CPU such as in the days of HEDT yore.

8:11 Gamer desktop motherboards aren't THAT expensive Gordon, short of LN2 overclocking motherboards which can cost 600, but that's a dumb choice to use for just gaming. With AM5 coming out, they will be that expensive just to HAVE regardless of your intentions, plus 250 for 16GB DDR5 RAM, and maybe 400 more for a PCIe gen 5 SSD. All of that gets super expensive just for first-gen AM5 growing pains. So i will be letting the first generation of AM5 (and the next one) go on by, allow it to mature and lower in price before I consider upgrading my 5800X3D.

Aha i have to auto-correct you as Gordon was saying ..and now you have 150 8 Core Cpus.. Just before entering the Amd event .. where Unveiling thee.. 7700xXx 8 Core for 400 tadaa! (Win xp sounds etc..)
in other flashlights .: as Wendell was saying there is a Gap here around 2:48 .. the haunting (for some) lovely blonde , passed at that time filling the Gap ,
Between Wendell and Gordon!
Do you think ,She was carrying nex-gen HEDT info?
Now thats what i call Coherent!

To me HEDT in this days would be 64 PCI-E lanes, from 16 cores up (maybe 12 Zen4) and at least 4ch DDR5 up to 512GB ECC suport... I think with Zen4 AMD would be on great path if would do Ryzen PRO with 24 or 32 cores and 4ch mem, that would be good base for low cost HEDT

I guess it's a market of 1, then. Pro is too much for too much, AM5 is ok for pcie, but not memory (I am NOT squeezing back into 64, tyvm). 32 cores, 256GB or bust. Doesn't mean I won't have to wait for years though. Been there, done that.

As an aside I am still quite mad at Intel for really milking the HEDT marked more than hard. Until AMD got more than pesky with their Threadripper. And over night Intel slashed their prices in half with many of their HEDT SKUs

Still have x299 system with no replacement in sight :( Glorious 40 pcie lanes with support for all kinds of bifurcation and not too shabby performance too.

still running my X99 5820k. haven't been interested anything that's come out so far to replace it, but zen 4 looks pretty good.
